As we celebrate the life of a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and exceptional friend, the memories that we have made together is what we will hold in our hearts forever. On Saturday, December 26th, 2020 surrounded by her loving family Marie Downey passed away at her residence in O’Regans at the age of 82 years. Born in Millville, Marie was the daughter of the late Benedict and Annie Smith (nee Kendall). She was also predeceased by her husband; George in 2017, sisters; Margaret Sheppard, Geraldine Smith, brothers; Gerard Smith, Joseph Smith, Vince Smith, sweet grandchildren; Shianne and Kyle Barry, father and mother-in-law; John and Maude Downey, brothers-in-law; Frank Downey, Edward Downey, Raymond Downey, Leo Downey, Augustus Downey, Thomas Downey, and sisters-in-law; Rose Brake, Theresa Prosser.
A devoted and loving mother, she will be forever missed by her children Rita (Bernie) Gale of O’Regans, NL, John Downey of Port Dover, ON, Diane (Victor) Walmsley of Scarborough, ON, Maureen (Charles) Barry of Kippens, NL, Clyde (Donna) Downey of Ajax, ON, George (Lauri Bouvier) Downey of Elliot Lake, ON, Karen (Marven Payne) Downey of Port aux Basques, NL, David (Charlene) Downey of St. Phillip’s, NL and Susan (Brian) Fiander of Mount Uniacke, NS. Nanny Downey will always remain in the hearts of her 17 grandchildren; Tammy, Jeremy, Cheryl, Sheila-Marie, Candace, Justin, Marc, Dylan, Robyn, Brandon, Bradley, Jennifer, Evan, Jack, Sam, Madison, Liam, 14 great grandchildren Reid, Hailey, Jackson, Caiden, Temperance, Keaira, Bishop, Kingsley, Harrison, Lennon, Adeleigh, Layla-Lee, Quinn, and Lily.
Marie also leaves behind sisters; Bridget Downey, Jean (Eddie) Henry, Rita McIsaac, Matilda Ryan, brothers; Ed (Gladys) Smith, Allan Smith, Jerome (Petrina) Smith, brothers-in-law; Michael Downey, Hyacinth Downey, sister-in-law; Margaret O’Gorman, plus a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Marie had a heart of gold and was loved by all she met and left an impression even on those who she hardly knew. Her love for her family lives on in all her siblings, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A cup of tea, a bun and conversation was a staple at her home, welcoming all who came to her door. Many of her family and friends will be kept warm not just by her wonderful memories but by her beautiful and precious quilts that she has made over the years. She loved going to bingo and really enjoyed a good game of cards. We were truly blessed for every moment we had and she will be remembered always with love.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 28th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at East Haven Funeral Home in Port aux Basques. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in Upper Ferry on Tuesday, December 29th, at 10 am officiated by Father Andrew White. Interment to follow at Mount St. Thomas Cemetery, Great Codroy. Flowers graciously accepted or donations in his memory can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation.
