Margibel (Johnston) Jones
1941-2020
Margibel (Johnston) Jones – 79, Valley,
Colchester County, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, in
Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, with her loving husband,
Wilson, by her side.
Margibel is also survived by her daughters, Diana (Trevor)
Locke and Keltie (Joy) Jones, Truro; son, Jeremy (Shannon) Jones,
Perth, Ontario; foster son, Bill (Annie) Busby, Dartmouth; twelve
grandchildren; five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her
parents, Munroe and Sarah (Sally) Johnston; brother, Angus
Johnston.
Margibel started life prematurely in Glace Bay, and then grew
up in Dominion, Cape Breton, Montreal, and Dartmouth. She graduated
from the Victoria General nursing program in 1963 and always remained
close to her classmates, many of whom were known as
“aunts” to her children. She met Wilson while
working for a summer at Keltic Lodge, then married him in 1963 and
went out west to Flin Flon and Snow Lake, Manitoba, to start their
family. They worked their way back east, collecting many dear,
lifelong friends along the way. After a few years in Ontario, and a
short stint in Europe for Michelin training, they finally returned to
Nova Scotia. They settled in the New Glasgow area and then moved to
Bridgewater. She resumed her nursing career there, eventually becoming
a well-respected critical care nurse. She was also committed to giving
back to her community through various congregations of the United
Church, Beta Sigma Phi (Bridgewater, New Glasgow and Truro), Red Cross
and other community organizations.
When they retired, they built their dream home on Caribou
Island, near Pictou, where Margibel was able to pursue her passions:
gardening, art, swimming in the ocean, walking on the beach, spending
time with family, and of course, gathering with her friends. From her
earliest years, she surrounded herself with close friends, sharing
endless hours of laughter and adventure (and, sometimes,
misadventure). Throughout her friend groups – neighbours,
nursing classmates and colleagues, sorority sisters, the
“Fast Lane Ladies” group, or fellow “Beach
Ladies” – Margibel could be relied upon for a
listening ear, a hug, a personalized painting, or a helping hand. She
embraced new experiences, traveled when she could, and delighted in
engaging with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved
passionately and was loved dearly by many.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Canadian
Mental Health Association, Colchester East Hants (ceh.cmha.ca) or the
charity of your choice. A celebration of Margibel’s life
will be held when we can all gather together again.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Private messages of
condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Margibel’s
