Margherita Rita Buttiri 2020

Obituary for
Margherita “Rita” Buttiri
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Margherita “Rita” Buttiri on June 23rd, 2020. She passed away peacefully at the age of 112 in Edmonton, AB. She is predeceased by her parents, Orsola and Luigi Buttiri and her niece, Angela Santin. She will be forever remembered by her great-nephews, Peter, Rick and Daniel Santin and their children, Tony, Nadine (Nigel), Conrad, Renata, Chondra, Danielle (Victor) and Terrin (TJ); and her great great-great-nephews, Parker, Oliver and Zephery. She will also be greatly missed by her dearest friends, Gabriella Slavic and family, Tim Senger and the Senger family, as well as numerous other family and friends in both Canada and Italy. The family wishes to thank the staff of Shepherd’s Care Kensington Village for their compassionate care through the time that Margherita lived there.
Margherita Buttiri was born in the picturesque, peninsular town of Rovinj, Croatia. As a child to a large Italian family of nine, she spent her early life traveling from place to place until the first world war when she and her family fled to a camp near Vienna, Austria. Following her return to Rovinj, Margherita worked many jobs, including serving in a restaurant and baking fresh bread at the family-owned bakery. When the second world war erupted, she was forced to leave her home and became a refugee along with her young niece. In January 1952 Margherita arrived in Canada to start her new life. She became a beloved member of her church community and spent her free time playing tile rummy with her close friends and knitting warm and comforting garments for infants in hospitals and charity organizations. She has always found a way to live a full life creating warmth, friendship and light wherever she had been. She has made many lasting friendships and will be remembered as a warm and joyful light to all who have known her.

Sympathies message

  1. Rita will always have a special place in my heart. I attended several of her birthday parties in her later years and when I asked about the secret to her longevity, she always replied that “it’s all up to God”. Her deep faith never wavered. My deepest condolences to her family; she will be remembered fondly.
