Obituary
(née Murchie)
1925-2020
With gratitude and thankfulness for a life well lived, the McKenzie family announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Margaret Florence McKenzie (nee Murchie) of White Rock, BC. who passed into the presence of her Lord & Saviour on December 4, 2020 at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Robert in 1996, son Bob (Debra) in 2002, brothers John and Ronald.
Margaret was the only daughter of John & Ella (Hamilton) Murchie of Vancouver, BC. Being of Scottish heritage, Margaret was proud of her Murchie and Hamilton pioneer families in early Vancouver. Her Murchie grandparents immigrated from the Isle of Arran, Scotland in 1881 establishing the Orient Tea Company, later becoming Murchie’s Tea & Coffee (1894) of Vancouver, BC where she helped out her father and uncles in the stores as a teenager. After her early years as a secretary and marriage in Vancouver, Bob and Marg moved to Calgary where she was active in her church, community and cottage life at Sylvan Lake. Raising an active family of six children was their love and joy, as well as enjoyment of their grand and great-grandchildren in later years. Many experienced Bob and Marg’s gracious hospitality throughout their 64 years in Calgary. They were active members of Bethany Chapel where there were many treasured friendships, times of worship and fellowship enjoyed over the years. As well, Margaret was a mentor to many young women and helped establish Christian Women’s Clubs in Calgary.
After wonderful years in Alberta, Margaret returned to BC in 2013 and enjoyed moving to White Rock BC. Most of all, Margaret cherished the Lord Jesus Christ and family, and leaves a legacy of commitment to the Christian faith, faithfulness, hospitality, kindness and friendship. Margaret’s favourite Psalm 23 and hymns, “It is Well with My Soul” “In Christ Alone” and “There is a Redeemer” were precious to her throughout her life. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by many.
Left to mourn are her beloved family of Sharon McKenzie (White Rock, BC), Heather (David) Webber (Calgary AB), Carol (James) Hoff (Sunriver, Oregon), Marilyn (Ronald) Cox (Edmonton, AB), John (Beverly) McKenzie (Sechelt, BC), 15 wonderful grandchildren, and 14 cherished great-grandchildren throughout Canada and the USA, Scottish cousins, nieces, nephew and cousins’ children.
Many thanks to Dr. M Lebl and staff at the Peace Arch, Dr. A Hogg 2 Pavilion, for their compassionate care of Margaret.
A private virtual remembrance and family graveside will be held in Calgary at Edenbook Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Thank you to Gail Bergen of Devlin Funeral Home in Gibsons, BC for their care and immediate attention.
In lieu of flowers, tributes may be made to the Gideon’s Foundation or a charity of choice.
