Obituary of Louis John Frere
Louis John Frère was born in St. Mary’s hospital in Trochu on February 14, 1937, the oldest son of John and Anna Frère (Knievel). He attended school at Pontmain in Trochu, Morinville Boarding School, St. John’s College in Edmonton, Composite School in Red Deer, Olds Agricultural School, and SAIT in Calgary.
Louis’ lifetime work was farming and ranching with his father, brothers and sons. With strong dedication he spent decades working on the pasture and crop land, he cleverly managed the cattle using his remarkable quiet approach, and he meticulously maintained the farm equipment. He passed on his vast knowledge by sharing and teaching each generation he worked, with a legacy remaining today.
Louis was a strong athlete with his skill and passion focused on hockey. He also loved dancing and music, a favorite dance partner to many in the family. He loved a good social whether it be a community event, happy hour, or coffee at the shop. His quick wit, intelligence, charm, and sense of humor were enduring attributes that attracted and impacted those in his company.
Louis was an incredibly giving person thinking of others before himself. He was a thoughtful and patient man, many have seen raising his index finger saying ‘Just a minute…’ and then offering his advice without actually telling you his idea was better than yours. Jokingly he often said: ‘I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.’
Louis adored his wife Lorene, their love for each other evident by the strong bond they shared. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, always interested in finding out about their lives and interests. He had an attentive ear, always offered to help where needed, and in every situation you could hear a good laugh or giggle accompanied by his unforgettable smile. You always felt important in his presence.
Louis is survived by Lorene, his loving wife of 61 year, their children and spouses Speedo & Laura, Toad & Holly, Johnny & Dorian, Andrew & Barb, Simone & Larry, Lewis & Mitzy and Shauna & Mike, 18 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
Louis passed away peacefully with Lorene by his side on July 5, 2020 at the age of 83 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Due to COVID restrictions, the memorial service will be only for the immediate family of Louis.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Anne Catholic Church.
