MARTELL, Lester Vincent
L’Ardoise, Richmond County, Nova Scotia
November 4, 1933 – May 4, 2020
It is with profound sadness that we must share that Lester Vincent Martell, 86, died peacefully at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston on May 4. Born in Rockdale, Lester was the youngest son of the late Wilfred and Nona (Langille) Martell.
Lester was a longshoreman, businessman, but most importantly a fisherman. He had an immense love for the ocean and was instrumental in the establishment of Lobsters R Us Seafood. He was an avid hunter and looked forward to his yearly hunting trips with the boys. In recent years, Lester could be found either at the shore, where there was always a project waiting for him, or taking in various card games in the area. Regardless of where you crossed paths with Lester, you could rest assured that his quick wit and numerous stories would leave you with a smile on your face.
In June 1966, Lester started his married life in New Jersey where he worked in construction. Two and half years later, the draw of home and family brought him back to Cape Breton where he started Martell’s Bus Service Limited and returned to fishing. He was one of the first fishermen to start fishing snow crab in Richmond County and more recently was very proud to win the federal court injunction to maintain the medical substitute operator designation for his lobster license. As with everything in his life, Lester was very passionate, determined and fought for what he believed in. He loved his family very fiercely and was always making sure they were provided for.
Lester is survived by his loving wife of nearly 54 years, Carolyn; son Blaire (Muriel); daughter Alayne (Donald); granddaughters Danielle (Andy), Meghan, Janelle (Tyler), Chelsey (Logan) and Molly; great granddaughter Lilah; sister Leone Landry; daughter-in-law Kendra (Reg Sampson); and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by his youngest son, Claude; brothers Lawrence, Johnny, Jimmie and Charlie; sisters Cora and Bessie; and great grandson Kenzie.
A private family burial will take place in the coming days and a celebration of Lester’s life will take place at a later date once we are able to gather. Memorial donations can be made to the Dr. Kingston Memorial Community Health Centre. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home. Messages to the family may be conveyed at www.greensfuneralhome.ca.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Lester Vincent Martell November 04 1933 May 04 2020..
