Leslie Thomas McCormick, B.A., A.M, PhD, October 11, 1940 to December 28, 2020, at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Les is survived by his beloved wife Beth (née Cardwell), daughter Laura Machan (Nolan) and grandson Jacob and fiancée Sara, and daughter Kate O’Grady (Rob) and grandchildren James and Madeline. He was predeceased by his parents Leslie and Mary McCormick.
Les was born in Toronto, finished high school at the age of 16 and went on to graduate from the University of Toronto in Modern Languages and pursued his A.M. and PhD at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Following teaching appointments at both Rutgers and the University of Michigan, Les was invited back to join the faculty at the new Erindale College Campus of the University of Toronto in Mississauga, now known as UTM. Following years of teaching Italian Studies and Film and being Head of the Italian Department, Les transitioned to University administration. He became Assistant Registrar, then Registrar and at retirement, Les was Vice Principal and Dean of Student Affairs for the UTM Campus. Throughout his academic and administrative career, Les demonstrated his commitment to the success of students, as a mentor, teacher, counsellor and advocate and, in return, made life-long friends of many students and colleagues. Les was a past president of the Rotary Club of Streetsville and past Vice-President of the Mississauga Industrial Association, promoting a strong link between the UTM campus and the Mississauga community as a whole. Les was an avid sports fan, especially for NFL and NCAA football and happily cheered on his Michigan Wolverines, Rutgers Scarlet Knights and his beloved New York Giants. Les will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and a mentor and friend to many students and his passing is an immense loss. Due to Covid restrictions, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place through Kopriva and Taylor Community Funeral Home in Oakville, where friends may leave messages and remembrances.
