Peacefully with his children by his side, Leo Santamaria, age 86, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2020. Leo is predeceased by his beloved wife Beatrice (2019) and survived by his devoted children Luci (Richard), Lori (Alec), Bart (Jennifer) and his grandchildren James, Lucas, Ty, Colin, Bella and Olivia. “Leo the Barber” as he was known, was born in 1933, in the town of Monte Sant’Angelo, Italy. Leo began working in a barbershop when he was 10. He came to Canada in 1951 and was blessed to meet the love of his life Beatrice and marry in 1958.
Leo opened South Windsor Barber Shop in 1967 and it became a fixture in the community until his retirement in 2010. Generations of families frequented the barber shop – a true testament to who Leo was as a person, not just a barber. He was an active member of the community and you could find him bowling on Thursday nights, spending time at the Knights of Columbus or cheering on the Windsor Spitfires with his friends as a proud season ticket holder. He and Beatrice loved to cheer on the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Blue Jays. Leo was quite the handy man, you could always find him fixing something in his garage.
Leo lived his life with integrity and set an example with his strong work ethic and commitment to helping others. Leo was beloved by so many wonderful family, friends and customers and will be greatly missed. We all take comfort now that he is reunited with Beatrice and his broken heart is now whole again.
A Celebration of Leo’s Life is planned for the spring of 2021, as circumstances allow.
