LEONARD WALKER
Alder Point
With heavy hearts we, the family of Edward “Leonard” Walker, age 82, announce his passing on Friday, September 4th, 2020. Leonard passed away at home, with his family by his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Leonard was the son of the late George (1964) and Genevieve (nee Devoe) (2010) Walker of Alder Point.
At a very young age he fished the North Shore and worked on the Wreck Cove Power Plant access road. Leonard worked at the fish plant in Alder Point on the wharf for many years, and worked his way up to become manager of United Maritime Fisheries. We have been told by many people that he gave them their first job. After his career at the fish plant, he scalloped and lobster fished with his brother Greg and good friend Earl.
Da loved hockey and was a die-hard Toronto Maple Leafs fan. In his younger years he played hockey for the Bras d’Or Lakers and the Old Time Hockey league later in life. In 2015 he was inducted into the Northside Sports Hall of Fame along with his brother Vince.
He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Jean (nee Phalen), his daughters Kim (Doug McNeil), Lynn (Kevin Mercer) and son Todd (Tammy Boutilier). Also left behind are his 5 grandchildren Shannon, Mitchell, Taylor, Brooklyn and Tristan, seven brothers; Kenny (Heidi), Sheldon, Gordon (Barbara), Donnie (Sandy), Gerard (Susan), Pius (Debbie), and Greg (Joanne) and six sisters; Anne Larade (Bob), Sr. Joan, Betty Graham (Brad), Norma Marsh (Lou), Carol Vickers (Johnny MacNeil), and Vicky Taylor (Jimmy), Uncle Johnny, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Dad was a kind and gentle soul who was loved dearly. His younger siblings looked up to him with great love and affection for guidance and support.
Leonard was predeceased by his sister, Helene (2010) and brothers Gib (2012), Vince (2020), Richard (1961) and James Adrian (1947).
A private family visitation will be held.
A graveside service will take place Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at 1:00 pm in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Leonard’s memory may be made to VON Cape Breton or Hospice Palliative Care Society. Words cannot express our gratitude to these wonderful nurses and doctors. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Leonard Walker 2020..
