Gerald Christopher Toney
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing
of Keptin Gerald Christopher Toney on November 6, 2020 at the age of
76. Gerald was born on November 21, 1943 in Berwick, NS to the late
Bernard and Regina (Copage) Toney. He is survived by sisters, Eileen
and Sandra; brothers, Brian, Wayne and Mark; daughter Keshia; sons,
James, Chief Gerald Jr. (Angela), and Roger (Jessica); grandchildren,
Lisa (Luke), Julian, Roger Jr., Mataya, Landyn, and Silas;
great-grandchildren, Ethan and Taylor; and many nieces and nephews. He
is predeceased by sister, Lorraine; brothers, David and Allen. Gerald
was a highly respected member of the Annapolis Valley First Nation and
was most proud of his role as Keptin of the Mi’kmaq Grand Council in
which he represented the entire Kespukwitk district and
Sipekne’katik district of Mi’kma’ki. Those who knew Gerald
knew how much he loved to work and travel. In his early years he
worked as a surveyor in Alaska, and proudly served as former Chief of
the Annapolis Valley First Nation. He then worked for HRDC Canada
(Manpower) as an employment officer for over 25 years and later went
on to work in multiple roles within the community such as, Community
Organizer, Community Economic Development Officer, and Band Manager of
the Annapolis Valley First Nation. Gerald devoted most of his life
working on community economic development, hosting workshops, and
serving elders in the community. He was also an avid golfer, hunter,
fisher and gatherer of Mi’kma’ki and was well
known for his teachings of making wooden baskets. Gerald also had a
deep passion for vehicles and racing and loved his Trans Ams. He
volunteered as an announcer at the Valley 4X4 races for many years and
volunteered at Valley Search and Rescue. Visitation will be held from
2:00 p.m. on Wednesday November 11, 2020 until 12:00 p.m. on Thursday
November 12, 2020 in St. Bernadette Church, Cambridge. Due to COVID-19
restrictions, physical distancing and masks are required. A
public graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday,
November 12, 2020 in the St. Bernadette Cemetery, Cambridge. Donations
in memory may be made to The Salvation Army. Funeral arrangements have
been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation
Services, Kentville.
