Obituary
Ken Yick Chau Mah passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 5 at 2am at the the William J. Cadzow hospital, in Lac La Biche, Alberta. He is survived by his beloved: wife, Woon Sau Mah, of 56 years, firstborn son, Wayne Mah of Lac La Biche, Alberta, (wife Jennifer, grandchildren Keanan and Brennan), daughter, Mona Nemetchek of Missoula, Montana, (husband Barrie, grandchildren: Michelle, Elizabeth, Derrick, Christian, Victoria and Ryan), youngest child, Phi Mah of Fort McMurray, Alberta, and younger brother, Yick Chip Ma of Prince George, BC (wife Judy and children Bonnie and Conan).
Ken immigrated to Canada from China in the late 1950s by traveling for months on a ship to San Francisco, California where he then boarded a northbound train. Speaking very little English, Ken arrived alone with little money and no support system in Canada. He diligently worked very hard to overcome language and financial barriers. Ken owned and operated the China Sail Restaurant, Hong Kong Inn, and Chopstick Kitchen in Prince George, BC from 1975-1995.
He enjoyed the past 16 years retiring in Edmonton with Sau and was incredibly blessed to be an active part of grandsons’, Keanan and Brennan, lives over the last 13 years. It is of great comfort to know Ken peacefully passed away in his sleep, pain free, in the very same hospital room where Keanan began his first days of life 13 years ago.
Our beloved husband, father and grandfather accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was baptized by Rev. Sung in early July. Ken has returned to his true home and is in the presence of Jesus Christ surrounded by his great glory.
There will be a viewing on Tuesday, Aug 11, from 11am-12pm, at the Mission View Funeral home, 133 Sentinel Industrial Park, Lac La Biche, Alberta. Ken will be transported to the Northern Lights Cemetery, NW Edmonton for a bi-lingual graveyard service with Reverend Sung. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice can be made under your name.
