Obituary of Kathlyn Margaret Johnston
It is with sadness that the family of Kathlyn “Kay” Margaret Johnston, wife of the late George Johnston, announces her peaceful passing on January 4, 2020 at the Loch Lomond Villa surrounded by her loving family. Born in Saint John on March 6, 1919, she was the only daughter of Charles and Mary (Hunter) Cherry.
Kathlyn was a life-long resident of Saint John, particularly the East Saint John. She was a devoted member of Stella Maris Church and years ago she was the President of the Stella Maris C.Y.O. She was a former president of the East Saint John Liberal Women’s Association and held various offices with the Provincial Liberal Women’s Association. She was also chair-person of the Saint John Fundy Liberal Association.
Kay enjoyed bowling, card club, and summers at Cambridge Narrows. In later years she would spend her summers in Cole’s Island. Her winters were spent in Florida where she was a member of St. Catherine’s Church.
For the last five years, Kay resided at the Loch Lomond Villa (Birch House). We, the family, wish to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff of Birch House for their loving care of our mother.
Kay will be deeply missed by her sons: Brian (Janet) Johnston of Saint John, Carl (Beverly) Johnston of Hopewell Cape, Wayne (Annette) Johnston of Saint John, Gary (Colleen) Johnston of Saint John, Tom (Donna) Johnston of Saint John; daughters: Barbara (Wayne) Agnew of Quispamsis, Karen Johnston and Lynn Johnston (Albert Bourgeois), both of Saint John; sister-in-law: Helen Cherry of Halifax; 18 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and her parents, Kay was predeceased by her brothers: Greg Cherry of Saint John, Lloyd Cherry of Ontario and Douglas Cherry of Halifax, NS; and sister-in-law: Margaret Cherry of Saint John.
Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visitation on Monday and Tuesday, January 6 and 7 from 2 – 4 PM and 6 – 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 10 AM from Stella Maris Church, followed by a burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
