Karen Ann Smithers
(nee Birmingham)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Ann Smithers on Thursday April 2, 2020 at the age of 57. After a long and courageous journey with cancer, she passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord, surrounded by her loving husband, Trevor, and children, Brianne (John) and Chris (Alyssa).
Karen was a true angel here on earth and loved by all who came to know her. A nurse for 30 years, Karen never stopped ministering to the needs of others, actively volunteering with multiple causes.
She is survived by her parents, Kevin and Pauline Birmingham, her brother Kevin (Jan) and sister Kathy. Much loved by her in-laws, Barbara and the late Peter Smithers and their children, Anne and Paul (Jean). Cherished and proud Nana to her loving grandson Bradley. Karen will be deeply missed by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Maurice Catholic Parish at a later date. A special thank you to Dr. Priscilla Bright and the Saint Elizabeth nurses for their compassionate care with Karen’s passing. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkdale United Church, specifying their “In From The Cold“ program, which provides a warm meal and companionship to Ottawa’s less fortunate and in which Karen had actively volunteered with for a number of years.
