Passed peacefully away at the Glenbrook Lodge, St John’s on June 9, 2020 June Roberta Cook in her 98th year. She was born on July 5, 1922 to Gus and Daisy Howse in St John’s, Nfld. June was predeceased by her loving husband Max (1994), only sibling Keith Howse (1966) (Hattie); brothers-in-law Tasker Cook (Ruby, Cavell), Angus Cook (Joan), Avalon Frampton; sisters-in-law Phyllis Walsh (Don), Rita Symonds (Art), and daughter-in-law Lucille Cook (Jeff).
Left with many loving memories, sons Gary (Rosalind) and Jeff (Deborah); daughters Jocelyn Laskey (Steven), Lois Bourne, and Deanne Cook (Barry); daughter-in-law Barbara Sparkes; grandchildren Jennifer Daly (Jason), Matthew Cook, Karen Blandford, Melanie Cook (Chris), Mandy Symonds (Richard), Corey Bourne (Tina), Stephen Blandford, Craig Bourne (Sandra), Leigh Chalker, and Chad Cranford/Cook; great-grandchildren Maxwell, Abbigail, Alyssa, Joshua, Kristen, Cameron, Hannah, Ryan, Penney, Scarlett; niece Jacqueline Howse, nephew Roger Howse, and sister-in-law Douglass Frampton along with numerous nieces and nephews on the Cook side of the family.
Mom, Grandma, June or Junie (as she was often called by husband, Max) lived life to the fullest. She was very open-minded and, in many ways, ” ahead of her time”. Whether it be family, friends or relatives from near or far, her door on Simms Street was open to everyone, always with an extra chair at the dining room table and or a bed for the night. June always had a warm smile, loving heart, and infectious kindness for everyone. Her family meant everything to her, and she loved to see them visit especially for family celebrations or for hot soup after a Santa Claus parade on a cold Saturday morning.
June had an amazing memory, especially for birthdays and anniversaries. In fact, she knew and remembered more about the Cook family than her husband Max. In her retirement years June spent her spare time completing the daily crossword puzzle in the Telegram, playing bridge with neighbours and friends, and of course watching the daily episode of “The Young and the Restless”.
In her younger years June was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts Ladies Auxiliary and gave some 50 years calling donors for the Canadian Red Cross Blood Collection Services.
June spent the last six-plus years at the Glenbrook Lodge in St John’s and her family would like to thank the staff for their exceptional care and attention to mom during this time.
Like her husband Max, June had requested that her body be donated to science, however it was not possible at this time. Therefore, her remains have been entrusted to Carnell’s Funeral Home in St. John’s for cremation. Due to the current pandemic there will be no visitation. At a future date, a committal service officiated by her son-in-law Rev. Steven Laskey will be held and June will be laid to rest beside her beloved Max at the Anglican Cemetery on Forest Rd in St John’s, NL.
In her memory June requested that donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Nfld & Labrador Chapter in aid of children who must travel to St John’s for treatment.
June will be greatly missed by all who knew her!
