Obituary
Joyce Cartmell passed away at the age of 94 of natural causes on May 17, 2020 in Calgary, Alberta. Joyce was born on October 2, 1925 in Great Harwood, Lancashire County, North England. Joyce was the first female police officer in Lancashire, and a Jane of all trades during WWII. Joyce proudly welded manifolds on Spitfires, was a weaver, baker, security guard, highway patrol, and hardware store clerk. Joyce immigrated to Canada with her husband Joe on May 31, 1957 and moved to Medicine Hat where she lived for nine years. In 1967, Joyce moved to Calgary where she lived on acreages in Saddleridge and Delacour. Joyce was an avid gardener, home decorator, fashionista, baker, bingo queen and domino champion. Joyce gat her driver’s license in her 50’sand despite all the planters that needed be repaired, she loved the freedom that driving gave her. Joyce gave joined the Navy Club, and was part of the women’s auxiliary for the Legion. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and daughter, and enjoyed travelling to Mexico and Vancouver. Joyce is survived by 2 daughters, a son-in-law, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
