Obituary
Somerton, John (Jack) – Passed peacefully away at home on November 4th, 2020 surrounded by his family, John Simon Somerton of Paradise, NL (formally of Bell Island, NL) at the age of 86 years.
Predeceased by parents Agnes and Clarence Somerton, sister Helen Trim, half brothers, Clarence, Walter and Wayne Somerton and grandson, Leo.
Leaving to mourn his wife Mary Somerton, his children; Mike Somerton (Georgina), Randy Somerton (Joanne), John Somerton (Dominika), Karen Squires (Frank), Cindy Somerton (Scott), his grandchildren; Jason, Tyler (Jana), Katie (Brad), Rebecca (Bobby), Stephen, Erica, Luke and Kane, and his great grandchildren; Faith, Blake, Tyson, Logan, Carter, Bree and Olivia.
He also leaves to mourn his half-sisters; Marie, Murtle, Eileen, Shirley, Gladys and Annie and half brother, Raymond, brother in law Dave Neville (Heather) and sister in law Tish Neville, along with a large circle of extended family members and close friends.
Jack lived a happy and very fulfilling life. He always had a smile and warm welcome for everyone he came into contact with. He loved his family very much and thoroughly enjoyed having fun with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved a good game of growl, was extremely artistic and able to play any musical instrument by ear. One of his all time favorite hobbies and talent was spending countless hours in his shed doing his intarsia woodwork.
Jack will be remembered fondly by those who knew him. He was a quiet, pleasant and good-natured man who made us all proud and was a big influence on all our lives.
Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton avenue on Sunday, November 8th, 2020 form 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm.Covid-19 restrictions in place. Funeral service will be held from Barrett’s Chapel on Monday, November 9th, 2020 at 11am. Interment to follow at Kenmount Road Anglican Cemetery, St. John’s.

The family would like to thank the nurses (angels) at the Eastern Health Community Support Program at Mt. Pearl Square for the excellent care and compassion given to Jack in his last few years. Special acknowledgment to all of the medical professionals associated with the Palliative Care Program who provided great comfort to Jack in his final days. As well as, thank-you to Dr. Domino Roy Chaulk and Dr. Shane Seal for Jack’s continued care.
