JOHN HOUNJET
It is with profound sadness that the family of John Hounjet announce his passing on April 19, 2020 at Diamond House assisted living facility. The love of his life, Anita, was by his side. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years Anita, his children: Dan (Marlene) Hounjet, Mark (Celine) Hounjet, Rick (Michelle) Hounjet, Yvette Bunker, Annette (Tom) Paul; his eight grandchildren: Carrie (Kent) Muench, Michael (Tammy Wilde) Hounjet, Brenda Maksymovitch, Richard (Paulina) Casement, Jazz (Mike) Penner, Johnathon (Sandra) Bunker, Heather Posnikoff, Laura (Shawn) Aseltine; his fifteen great-grandchildren: Noah, Adlai and Kalen Muench, Hayden and Salomon Hounjet, Abbey, Ellie, Maggie and Holly Maksymovitch, Jack Casement, Grayson Posnikoff, Samantha and Lukas Bunker and Graffin and Daisy Aseltine; his sister Emily (Marc) Gabriel; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his parents Henri and Margarite Hounjet, his sisters: Helen, Rosalie (Henry) Janex, Angeline (Aurel) Sirois, Hubertine (Pierre) Carrobourg; his brothers:Rene (Marie) Hounjet and Roland (Lena) Hounjet; as well as his son-in-law Edward Bunker.
Dad was born on October 20, 1931 on a farm in St. Denis, Saskatchewan. From an early age a strong work ethic played an important role in his life. In 1950, he moved to Saskatoon and in 1951 he met the love of his life Anita Hoscheit. They were married on August 18, 1953. He started his 23 year career at Shelly Brothers Warehouse in 1952. Dad was a hard worker and even after a long day working in the warehouse he would be met by his girls wrapping their arms around his legs, wrestling with the boys just trying to get to his easy chair for some much deserved rest. In 1975, he and mom picked up the family and moved to Meacham, Saskatchewan where they owned and operated the Meacham General Store. In 1977, the family moved back to Saskatoon where Dad worked as a painter at City Hospital until his retirement.
Never one to throw much away, Dad was forever a collector. This was evident by his garage where he spent so much time puttering around fixing things or repurposing them. If you needed something he probably had one in that garage. Dad and Mom along with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoyed much time at their cottage at Wakaw Lake. He loved to fish and enjoyed sitting on the deck or in the shade talking to whomever was there or walked by. He would not only converse but he listened very attentively and with great interest to what others had to say. Dad had many friends and shared many stories. Dad was a family man first and foremost and set a wonderful example of what a son, husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather should be. His greatest joys were these, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He drove Mom crazy with a magic lap that could get any baby to sleep. These lucky young ones knew grandpa as a teaser and someone they could have fun with, as long as it didn’t involve getting sticky – Dad did not like to be sticky. He shared string tricks and puzzle games with them.
Anyone whose life he touched is better for having known him. We thank you Dad for the wonderful example you set and the love you shared with us all.

In 2019 Dad and Mom moved to Diamond House. We are so very grateful for their compassionate care and their considerate and continued support. Due to ongoing global events a Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Dad’s name to the Children’s Wish Foundation (3602 Millar Avenue, Saskatoon, SK S7P 0B1) is requested.
When you have no light to guide you and no one to walk beside you, I will come to you.
When the night is dark and stormy, you won’t have to reach for me, I will come to you.
