WARD, Mary Joan
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Ward (nee Lawlor) on February 14th at the Ottawa Hospital in her 89th year. Born December 21st, 1931 in Saint John NB, Joan was predeceased by her parents Helen Gillis and William Lawlor. For 57 years the beloved wife of the late Colonel Ozzie Ward, and loving mother of John (Diana Chang) of Vancouver, and Michael (Patricia Maloney), Anne (Robert Miller) and Beth (Alain Denis) all of Ottawa. Predeceased by sisters Catherine Nugent and Maureen O’Neil; and brothers William; Laurence; Gregory; Gerald; and Peter Lawlor. Cherished grandmother of Christopher (Sierra); Alexa; David; Adam; Ryan; and Michael Maloney; and great grandmother of Jack. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. A dedicated military wife, Joan left Saint John in search of adventure and made many lifelong friends on our nomadic journey and many postings to such exotic locales as Soest Germany, Petawawa, Shrivenham England, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Chaffey’s Lock in support of her family. She was the cornerstone of our tight-knit, resilient family and was always there to help us adapt to those frequent disruptions. Joan lived stoically and courageously with Rheumatoid Arthritis for over 40 years, and never let it diminish her faith, nor get in the way of a fulfilling life, and a passion for golf and CFL Football. A devoted nurse, who graduated from St Joseph’s Hospital, Saint John NB in 1953 she was a pillar of strength and compassion for her patients, friends and family, and to numerous underprivileged children throughout the developing world in whom she took an active interest and sponsorship. We are especially grateful to the staff of the Ottawa Hospital for their kindness and unwavering support throughout Joan’s brief illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1758 Alta Vista Drive, Ottawa on Friday 21 February at 11:00 a.m. Visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Rite of Committal at Beechwood National Military Cemetery, Ottawa at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations made to the Ottawa Hospital or the Arthritis Society would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Scotland Funeral Home, 27 Main Street, Elgin Ontario K0G 1E0 613-359-5555 or at www.scotlandfuneralhome.com
