Joan Anderson Roberts nee Knowling November 9 1923 to February 28 2020

Passed away peacefully at Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residence on Friday, February 28, 2020. Joan was predeceased by her husband Dr. James B. Roberts (1994) and her son Dr. W. James Roberts (2017). Leaving to mourn her son David Roberts of Brigus; daughter Dr. Ann Roberts of St. John’s; daughter-in-law Edna Roberts of Carbonear; granddaughters Felicity Roberts (Dave Hopley) of St. John’s and Virginia Roberts (Bill Gibelli Jr.) of Atlanta, Georgia as well as many other relatives and friends including Phyllis Ryall. Born in St. John’s on November 9, 1923, Joan was the daughter of the late William Knowling and Margaret Anderson. She was educated at Bishop Spencer School, St. John’s and Edgehill School, Nova Scotia. During WW2 she was employed by the Royal Canadian Navy in St. John’s where she worked as a civilian cypher. In 1943, Joan married James Roberts and together they enjoyed life in St. John’s and Barking Kettle Pond where they raised their family. She volunteered at the Grace Hospital Auxiliary and later the Botanical Gardens. For seventeen years Joan served as a member of the St. John’s Metropolitan Board. Thanks are extended to the excellent and caring staff at Kenny’s Pond Retirement Residence where she resided for the last seven years as well as to Dr. R. Woodland and Dr. P. Crocker for their attentive care. At Joan’s request, cremation has taken place and a celebration of her well-lived life will take place at a later date.
