Obituary for
Jeannette Edna Whissell
WHISSELL, Jeannette Edna Marie
March 2, 1940 – December 22, 2020
It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Jeannette Edna Marie Whissell (née Génier). With the only burst of sunshine on an otherwise gloomy day, Jeannette bid her family a loving farewell on December 22nd, 2020.
Jeannette is and was a most beautiful and generous soul, held in high regards by all who knew her. She was the eldest daughter of the late Isidore and Aline Génier (née Brunet) and cherished sister of Gerald Génier, Patricia Moïse (Claude) and the late Madeleine Génier, who nicknamed her “la Soeur Supérieure”. Beloved wife of 57 years to Victor Whissell and loving mother of Michelle Mullin (Philip), Lise Whissell (Omerdin Omer), Eric Whissell (Nina), Jeffrey Whissell (Kristen) and Nicole Gauthier (Alain). Doting grandmother of Zackery Mullin (Alexandria), Jackson Mullin (Haley), Sprague Whissell, Alexandre Gauthier, Nicholas Gauthier and Miguel Gauthier and great-grandmother of Bowen Mullin. She will also be fondly remembered by many loving nieces and nephews, cousins and good friends.
Jeannette put her heart and soul into everything she took on. While her greatest accomplishment was raising her family, she was also proud of her thirty-year career as a Registered Nurse and her 10-year involvement with the Sudbury Business and Professional Women’s (BPW) club, including her service as club President in 1990 – always working to fulfill the club’s mandate of improving women’s professional opportunities. The influence of late BPW members, Rachel Proulx and Anita Thompson, was recognized by Jeannette herself, who often stated how these women “instilled within [her] the confidence and the desire to help others as well as a lifelong interest in politics”. She spoke fondly of her time spent kayaking at the Sudbury Canoe Club as well as the inspirational group of women with whom she had the pleasure of rowing with. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, as well as her nursing crew with whom she continued to meet with regularly.
She had the warmest smile ever and a terrific laugh that instantly made people feel comfortable. She was ever thoughtful in putting the needs of her loved ones ahead of her own. Jeannette leaves behind a rich legacy of love, kindness and service.
Jeannette / Mom, we miss you already and will remember you always with joy in our hearts. Until we meet again!
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
