Memorial Donation
Janice (Anderson) Baxter passed away peacefully in Magrath, Alberta on May 16th, 2020 at the age of 75 years. The eldest of 12 children, mother of 2, grandmother of 4 and great-grandmother of 4, Janice lived a life deeply devoted to her family and faith. Though born in Great Falls, Montana on October 13th, 1944, Janice spent much of her life in the farm communities of southern Alberta. She lived in Barnwell, Alberta as a child, starting classes in the little two room schoolhouse. Sometimes she would sneak onto the school bus, driven by her grandfather, Oris Long, so she could visit her grandparents farm south of Barnwell. The family soon moved to Milk River, Alberta, where Janice spent the rest of her schooling and growing up years. Janice spent much of her time helping her family, tending to her siblings as much as causing mischief with them. She held a great love of nature, too. Often visiting Waterton and exploring the native prairies. After high school, Janice moved to Rosemary to work for Woodrow and Gladys Stringham. While there she met and married Robert Baxter, they had two daughters, Mary and Sheila. While the family moved between Makepeace and Calgary for a time, they ultimately settled down on an 82 acre farm just outside of Bassano. Janice spent the next three decades raising her two daughters, sheep, cattle, farm dogs, an array of farm cats, and wild grandchildren. Eventually, she retired to Taber, Alberta and then to the Lethbridge area to be closer to family. She spent her final years loving her mother, her brothers and sisters, her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Janice served with her whole heart, love and devotion in her church and in each community she lived in, bringing comfort through her company and well-loved recipes. She left a great deal of love and charity in this world. Janice is survived by her mother, Evelyn (Long) Anderson of Lethbridge; her daughters, Mary (Cliff) Blackwell and Sheila Baxter; her grandchildren: Andrea Blackwell with great-grandchildren Amelia and Henry, Jessa (Mark) Bennett with great-grandchildren Reese and Graham, Benjamin Blackwell, and Daniel Blackwell; her 6 brothers and 5 sisters, and their families; and her brother-in-law, George Baxter, and his family. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert (Bob) Baxter; father, Robert Anderson; father-in-law, Andy Baxter; mother-in-law, Rena Baxter; and sister-in-law, Karen Baxter (George). In compliance with current restrictions due to Covid19, a family service will be held on Saturday, May 23rd at the Bassano Cemetery. In memory of Janice, if friends desire, memorial donations made directly to Harbor House Women’s Emergency Shelter, c/o YWCA Lethbridge and District, 604 – 8th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 2K1.
