Devoted husband of Willemijntje (Willie – nee Van Oosterom) for 67 years. Jake is survived by Willie and their children: Keith (Pippa), Hubert (Salina), Christine (Larry James), Joanne, and Henrietta (Peter Knowles). He will also be remembered by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brothers Kees (Southampton) and Jan (Parry Sound), nieces and nephews, and Anja, Willem and family in the Netherlands. Predeceased by his first-born son Bill (d 1984), sister Map (d 1956), brother Willem (d 1944), mother Willemina (d 1944) and father Jacob (d 1975).
Jake was born in Bodegraven, the Netherlands, and emigrated to Canada in 1952. Willie joined him soon after. They were both proud to become Canadian citizens. They settled and raised their family at their farm on the 4th Line of Erin Township, on Melvin Avenue in Oakville, and then back at the farm for many more years. Jake lived a long and full life with many friends, and interests including wine making, traveling, hobby farming, gardening, fishing, camping, canoeing, birding, and more, but he always put his wife and family first. The family would like to thank the staff at Riverside Glen & Wellington Terrace for their wonderful care of Jake in his last years. A celebration of Jake’s life will hopefully take place Spring 2021. Arrangements have been entrusted to MacKinnon Funeral Home, Acton.
Jake was a quietly strong and resilient man who thrived despite much tragedy in his life, but these recent months of isolation due to the pandemic took a great toll on him. In memory of Jake, please reach out to someone who’s alone because of the pandemic, tell a joke, and enjoy a good meal with a glass of red wine. We will all miss him dearly.
