Obituary
It is with deep sadness that the family of Paul “Jack” Hammer, age 84, announce his passing on Friday, May 8, 2020 at the Meadows in Swift Current, SK.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Ruby (Martens) Hammer; his children and their families, Bryan (Shauna) – her children, Billy and Benjamin: Brenda Heath – her children, Leanne (Matt) Walz, and their children, Addison and Yvonne: Shari (Cody Pilsner) – their son, Vaughn: Kelsey (Jeff) Brasseur – their son, Wyatt: Michael (Joedy): Curtis – his daughter, Cassie; his sister, Frieda Beglau; his mother-in-law, Tina Martens; Ruby’s eight siblings & their spouses; and by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Paul (1966); his mother, Ida (1983); his brothers & their spouses: Henry, Ernest (Helena), Oswald (Hattie), Raymann (Luella), Gordon (Adeline), Harold (Dorothy); his sisters & their spouses: Selma (Abe), Pearl (Art), Violet; his brother-in-law, Lawrence Beglau; and by his father-in-law, John Martens.
Jack was born on January 2, 1936 in Chaplin SK, the youngest child of eleven born to Paul & Ida Hammer. Jack was raised on a small farm in the Chaplin area. He went to school in Bothwell and in Pine Lake. In grade 9, due to an accident his Pa had, Jack had to quit school and help on the farm. In winter months, he lived in Moose Jaw and worked at the Government Seed Plant. He had numerous jobs through these years.
In September 1958, he started his career with Sask Wheat Pool at Hodgeville, later moving to Mossbank, Kincaid, Claydon, Climax and Waldeck. In 1963, he made Waldeck his home where he stayed and retired in June 1994. That September, he started driving school bus for the Prairie West School Division and drove for 14 years. Jack was a hard worker and couldn’t get farming out of his blood after working for the elevator 9-10 hours, so he would help farmers seed, harvest, bale hay, check their crops, build steel bins, and also sold Hail Insurance. In the winter months he would run a trap line.
In September 1980, Jack & Ruby were married. They were blessed with a son, Curtis Paul, on June 18, 1983. This completed the family. Jack & Ruby enjoyed working together, where Jack taught Ruby that working hard could be fun and enjoyable. They loved camping, traveling, and fishing. In his younger years, Jack played, coached, and umped for kids, mens, and ladies ball teams. Jack was also on Council at Waldeck and at the Resort Village of Beaver Flat.
Under his rough exterior he had a soft heart. Although he didn’t get to see all his children, he would often mention them to Ruby while she visited him in the Meadows. He thought of them a lot!! Jack will be dearly missed, but fondly remembered by his family and friends.
The Private Family Graveside Service for Paul “Jack” Hammer was held on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 from the Mount Pleasant Burial Park Columbarium, Swift Current, SK with Pastor Kevin Snyder officiating. The tribute was given by Eileen Knakoske. In memory of , donations made to would be appreciated by the family.
In lieu of flowers and in memory of Jack Hammer, donations made to the Parkinson’s Society, Lung Association, or Canadian Mental Health would be appreciated by the Family.
