Obituary
Goodnight, Irene.
Irene Frayn was a vibrant and sassy lady. Even as Alzheimer’s disease slowly stole everything from her, flashes of her old self shined through when she smiled, when she laughed. Her eyes still sparkled when she told a joke or spouted something witty, even though no one else had any clue what she’d said or why it was funny. But that didn’t matter. As long as she was laughing.
Irene was born in Cardston, Alberta, the 10th of 11 children of Solomon Samuel and Pearl Stott Lowe. She was predeceased by her parents, and all of her brothers and sisters. Irene worked for the CPR in Lethbridge and Calgary in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s before meeting Don Frayn, a dashing RCMP Constable with whom she shared an enviable love story. She focused on raising her children, until they were too cool to need her, then turned her attention to volunteerism and politics. Irene was a poet and an artist who missed her calling. She had an amazing green thumb and could make anything grow and thrive, including her son and daughters, along with many other neighbourhood children who considered her a second mother.
Irene is survived by her daughter Julie Frayn; her son John Frayn (Suvi); her grandchildren, Joshua and Jonathan Wilks, James Frayn (Cassidy), Brynn Archibald (Luke Godin) and Charlie Archibald, Anika, Evan, Spencer, and Jorden Frayn; and her great-grandchildren, Clementine and Eleanor Frayn, and Jayden and Marcus Wilks. Irene was predeceased by her husband, Donald Frayn, and her daughter, Carolyn Frayn. She was also predeceased by her many beloved pets.
Irene did not want a funeral. Instead, there will be a “Going Away Party” at the Wainwright Hotel in Heritage Park (1900 Heritage Drive SW, Calgary) on Friday, March 20, 2020 at 12:00pm.
Many thanks to the staff at AgeCare Walden and AgeCare Midnapore for caring for Irene in her final years.
