1935 – 2020
The family of Hugh is sad to announce his passing at home on Sunday, July 12th.
Hugh will be greatly missed by his wife Agnes of 64 years. His three children: Brian (Nan) Ottawa, Stephen Richmond, B.C, Carolyn (James) Melbourne, ex daughter in law, Melody. Hugh will be missed by both his granddaughters, Kaylee and Catherine, they were the joy of his life. His sisters, Betty of St.Catherines, Mary of Vernon, and his nieces and family in Canada, nephew Andrew (Tracy) of Montreal, and all the family in Scotland.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, brother Edward and sister Ann.
Hugh was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland where he studied to become an elevator engineer. When his apprenticeship ended he installed elevators all over Scotland, moving to Canada with his wife in 1956. Hugh and his family went on to live in different cities throughout Canada, notably: Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, and Halifax before moving to BC. Hugh worked for the last 14 years of his career for the BC government as an elevator inspector, retiring to Vernon in 2000.
Hugh’s hobbies included working on his old car, listening to country music, old tv shows and working on projects around the house. Hugh loved to winter in Needles, CA where he made lifelong friends.
The family would like to thank our lovely neighbours for their help and support through these difficult times.
A special thanks go to Dr. Vincent, Dr. Sholtz, Dr. Humphries, Dr. Cunningham, Dr. Yackishane, his nurses at VGH as well as the Palliative care team #4 that treated Hugh with great care.
Per Hugh’s request, there will be no formal funeral. The family plans on having a small celebration of life when possible. In lieu of flowers, if you wish donations can be made to either the VGH or The Canadian Cancer Society.
