Hugh’s Obituary
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father, Hugh Allan Jewkes, at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center on December 6, 2020, with his children by his side and Elvis in his ear. He has left behind us, his loving children, Keri Ann (Tony Scott), Jason (Marie), and grandchildren, Emily, Riley Ann, Dylan, Quinn, and Emmett and his sweet great-grandson, Liam; as well as his companion, and adventure partner, Debbie Bryan; Hugh’s wonderfully caring sisters, Connie Mills (Art Somers), Margie (George) Miller, Cathy (Casey) Grant; special sister-in-law, Jennifer LeBlanc, brother-in-law, Carl Hatton are left to help us grieve this huge loss; as well as many nieces and nephews who have tons of fond and loving memories of Uncle Hughie. We are thankful for all the love and support the family has given to us and dad. Hughie was predeceased by his parents, Helen (Gillis) and Roy Jewkes, his wife, Barbra Lynn (Hatton), brother, Walter, nephews, Phillip White and Brendan Grant. Dad was a diehard Springhiller, even when he left for Ontario, where he married his loving wife, Barbara, he felt the call of “The Hill”, and they came home to raise us. He had no desire to ever leave Springhill. We’re sure he is happy knowing he was a Springhiller until the end. He worked for the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission for 25 years. Dad was a fixture in the community; he was always up for a chat and a laugh. He loved to have a good time. His family meant the world to him. He was a proud father, he truly felt that sunshine shone from of both of us kids. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandson; time with them was as good as gold in Dad’s mind. His nieces and nephews, and siblings also held a very special place in his heart. It’s heartwarming for us to know that Dad is now with our Mom, Uncle Walt and lifelong friends, Smokey, Dennis and Carl. Listening to some music (we’re sure it’s Elvis if Dad’s got anything to do with it), having a drink, and without a doubt owning the dance floor. We want to give a special thanks to Dad’s good buddies, Larry and Bruce for their years of friendship and all their visits, especially over the past few months. Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 10 in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill. Arrangements in the care of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home and Crematorium.
