Helen’s Obituary
Helen Cecilia Fullowka, beloved wife of the late Mike Fullowka, passed away peacefully at the Invermay Care Home on June 24, 2020, at the age of 87 years.
Helen was born on January 7, 1933, to Steve and Nellie (Shimko) Tabin. She attended Mason School in the Invermay area. Helen met Mike Fullowka and they were united in marriage on October 17, 1949.
In 1950, they moved to the farm where they made their home and raised their family for the next 42 years. In 1992, they sold the family farm and moved to Canora and made it their new home.
Mike passed away in 2014, and Helen continued to reside in Canora. In the spring of 2018, she became a resident of the Invermay Care Home, where she resided until her passing.
Helen’s life was full of raising her six children, working on the farm and gardening. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and sharing favorite recipes she found in the newspaper. Helen also had the talents of sewing and crocheting. She loved her family and hearing stories of her grandchildren’s achievements and special moments. She enjoyed large family gatherings, especially when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to visit.
Helen participated in church functions and when she could no longer attend mass, she still sang hymns, prayed the rosary, and watched daily mass on TV. She would never pass up a good game of canasta. Additionally, Helen was an avid Blue Jays and wrestling fan (this is where she learned to do a smackdown on perogies.) She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, Steve and Nellie; her husband, Mike; son, Laverne; grandson, Timothy; and her four brothers: Mike, Frank, Ed and Walter.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Christine (David) Shabbits; sons: Dennis (Flo), Gerald (Monique), Patrick (Shawna), and Michael; daughter-in-law, Sheila Fullowka; sisters-in-law: Alex, Ruth and Florence; her ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A Public Visitation will be held at 7:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, June 29, 2020, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 30, 2020, from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Franklin Emereuwa, as Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church – Building Fund or to the Invermay Health Centre Auxiliary, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Helen Fullowka.
