SCHULTZ, Harold James
July 1, 1935 – May 12, 2020
Harold was born on the family homestead farm near Waldheim, SK on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. Dad claims to have had to swim the river and then travel by horseback to attend school in the early years; apparently, it was uphill both ways. Harold completed Teacher’s College in Saskatoon and began his career teaching in a one-room schoolhouse, then moved to Kinistino where he taught and was later appointed principal of the elementary school. Harold caught the eye of a young bank teller, Evelyn Mohr, in Kinistino, when he went in to deposit his first cheque as a new teacher. They were married in 1958 and all 4 children were born at the Kinistino Union Hospital. Harold developed a keen interest in middle years education and in 1968, moved to Melfort where he was principal of the Division III School. While there, he received a sabbatical to complete his Master of Education at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1975, Harold and family built a log cabin at East Trout Lake, which has provided many great family memories. He really didn’t have any carpentry experience, yet tackled and successfully built a 24 x 40 foot cabin from locally harvested White Spruce logs that Evelyn polished with boiled linseed oil until the cabin glowed. Dad’s favorite place was at the campfire and enjoying a cigar whilst playing horseshoes with his family; he had amazing hand eye coordination with the shoe, and was always a sought after partner. He also enjoyed fishing, which at East Trout, demanded great patience and low expectations; it was really about the company and scenery. After 10 years in Melfort, Harold and family moved to Saskatoon for a position of Executive Assistant with the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation. He was invested in supporting teachers of Saskatchewan through enhancements to Middle Years Education, and travelled extensively in the province to support local teacher associations. We remember him racking up 60,000 kilometers in a year. After Harold retired from the STF in 1992, he was a part of the founding of the Dr. Stirling McDowell Foundation for teacher research. He continued to work on teacher and administrative development for 3 terms in India, 3 terms in the Kingdom of Bhutan and as director of NORTEP (Northern Teacher Education Program) in La Ronge, a Bachelor of Education program for northerners. Dad was always our first call when any of us needed a sounding board on a difficult decision in life. His supportive words and positive influence always left you feeling better and our hearts are missing him now. He had a gift for engaging people and really listening – he was a true gentleman and scholar with the soul of a cowboy. Harold was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn, and will live on in the loving memories of their family: Eileen Gudmundson (Garth), Adam (Breeann Heggie), and Leah; Michael, Brooke, Roxanna, and Katja; Christopher (Liane), Nicholas and Sophia; and John (Darlene), Emma and Molly. A celebration of life will be held in the future.
