Gordon “Gord”‘s Obituary
SLAGHT, Gord – Passed away peacefully at his home on Monday April 27th, 2020. Mr. Gord Slaght of Simcoe in his 100th year. Beloved husband of the late Audrey Slaght (2008). Son of the late Lloyd and late Hazel Slaght. Loving father of Karen Malby (Jerry) of Tyndall, Manitoba, Terri Slaght (Jim Caswell) of St. Williams, Suzanne Rutter of Coquitlam, B.C., Jo-Anne Baker (Kern) of Winkler, Manitoba, Leslie Biggs of Simcoe and Stacey Smith (late Gary) of Dresden. Cherished Grampy to Gordon, Keri (Darryl), Thomas (Fernanda), Michelle, Aaden (Liz), Krystle (Ray), Tristan (Amanda), Lindsay, Keela (Shane) and 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Predeceased by his siblings Melville Slaght, Gean McPherson, Ralph Slaght and Don Slaght. Gord will be sadly missed by many other relatives and friends. He was very proud of his 24 years served in the Air Force. He enjoyed the friends he made and travelling he did while in the service. He and the family made sure to travel around Europe as much as possible while based at 3Wing in Zweibruken Germany. Whenever a member of the family was home for a visit dad would put together a slide show. I’m sure he had thousands of slides from all the travel and camping the family did. He loved water skiing, was a daredevil on them. Taught as many of his daughters, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors that were willing to learn. Dad last tried to water ski the summer after his 90th birthday. Dad would be the 1st to admit that he wasn’t a good golfer, but he loved to get out and golf as much as possible. After he found golfing too hard he switched to mini golf, which he enjoyed, possibly more than regular golf. He played mini golf until he was 97. Dad enjoyed winter sports as well. He enjoyed downhill and cross country skiing and curling. He also enjoyed watching sports on TV. He was a lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan. The Toronto Blue Jays were his baseball team. Dad was a quiet man. He lived in a house full of women so we think he left the chatter to us. In his later years Dad opened up a little more telling some of us stories from his life. With respect to the Covid-19 regulations cremation will take place. A private family service will be held with interment at Oakwood Cemetery Simcoe. Arrangements are entrusted to the FERRIS FUNERAL HOME, 214 Norfolk St. S., Simcoe. (519-426-1314) If so desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences may be made at www.ferrisfuneral.com
