Obituary
(Gladys) June Fyvie
(nee Blenko)
August 1, 1929 – November 29, 2020
On Sunday evening, November 29, 2020, our dear Mom slipped from her body of pain into an eternity of light and hope with Jesus.
Born in Maidstone, Saskatchewan the second of three sisters, June left home at 17 to study the new profession of psychiatric nursing. Upon graduation and marriage to her fun-loving fellow-student Gordon, they packed up his truck and migrated west to the BC Coast. Over time June found that nursing in the field of geriatrics was her joy, and as children, our lives were enriched with the life-stories of the ones she cared for.
Retiring at the age of 55, June was free to travel to her heart’s content. As well as exploring much of the US and the Canadian Maritimes, she bravely circumnavigated the UK on her own, travelled in China just prior to the Tiananmen Square protest and made extended visits to Greece to visit her kids who lived there during the 90’s.
In later years, June’s passion for gardening was inspirational and she brightened our homes with an abundance of colour and fragrance. She was a long-time member of the Chilliwack Garden Club, serving on the executive with enthusiasm and creativity. June was, overall, a person very content in her own company. When winter days kept her inside, she stitched gardens in quilts and needlepoint.
She loved her family. Sadly predeceased by Gordon, and by her sons Doug and Brian, her memory is treasured by her beloved son Randy Fyvie (Moose Jaw), her daughter and well-loved son-in-law, Jana and Trevor Eby (Gibsons); six grandchildren and their mates; and eleven greats and even a great grandson-in-law.
It was difficult to see Mom’s strength, her clarity of thought, and even her cheerfulness decline in recent months as her heart began to fail. Her final two and a half months were spent at Christenson Village where she daily spoke of how good and how kind her care-givers were. Heart-felt thanks to all of the staff on Complex Care 3. And warmest thanks to her remarkable doctor, Jenny Phillips.
To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. — Thomas Campbell
