Obituary
William George Herman Nyhoff, beloved husband of Sharron Patricia (Eccleston) Nyhoff, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2020 in Lethbridge, AB at the age of 80.
Born in Lethbridge, AB in 1939, George spent his early childhood years in the Nobleford, AB area with his loving parents and six siblings. His humble beginnings instilled in George an incredible work ethic and drive, propelling him to success in his life and enabling George to mentor his children and grandchildren to success in their own lives.
George moved to Lethbridge, AB in 1955, attending LCI, where he met the love of his life, Sharron. Upon graduation, George attended the University of Alberta, earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with Distinction. After university, George returned to Lethbridge to marry Sharron in 1961. Together, they raised four children, Darren Nyhoff, Susan (Nyhoff) Van Ree, Doug Nyhoff and Kevin Nyhoff.
George started his career in the construction industry at the age of 16, working summers as a labourer at Glen Little Construction, continuing throughout university. After university, George joined the company full-time as an Engineer, helping develop the business and ultimately becoming President. George later partnered with his son Darren, forming Nyhoff Construction in 1989 until retiring in 2015. In total, George spent approximately 60 years in the industry he loved, working on notable projects throughout Lethbridge and the surrounding communities, enjoying many relationships formed with others, earning a respected reputation for hard work, honesty, fairness and integrity.
Though George’s career was very important, family was always his first priority. He loved Sharron deeply, working hard to provide a good life for them both. They were fortunate to indulge their love of travel, enjoying many wonderful adventures around the world, always returning to share their experiences with family and friends. George was always there for Sharron through the good times and bad, as Sharron was for George. Their love for each other was deep and long lasting.
George considered his children and grandchildren his greatest “construction” project in life, for which he was immensely proud of everyone’s accomplishments and success. George believed in instilling the value of hard work and education while providing many opportunities for the family to gather and travel, creating wonderful experiences and memories for all. Nothing made George happier than being surrounded by his grandchildren, teaching them to fish, sharing barbeque skills, telling tall tales and watching them play in his backyard. George will be sorely missed by all, but be remembered by his family as a kind, generous, tenacious and funny man.
Second only to family, George loved gardening, pouring his heart and passion into his yard, ensuring he grew the best flowers, and tomatoes, for all to view and enjoy. In addition, George had a passion for restoring several antique cars over the years.
George is survived by his wife Sharron Nyhoff, children Darren (Cindy) Nyhoff, Susan (Ken) Van Ree, Doug (Karen) Nyhoff and Kevin (Mairi) Nyhoff, grandchildren Kalie Van Ree, Braeden (Ingrid) Van Ree, Taylor Nyhoff, Mason Nyhoff, Kennedy Nyhoff, Olivia Nyhoff and Asher Nyhoff, along with his siblings Francis Dudley, Rense Nyhoff, Elta (John) Buckman, Ken Nyhoff and Marvin Nyhoff. He was predeceased by his sister Ruth (Nyhoff) Kambeitz and parents Albertus Nyhoff and Maurine (King) Nyhoff.
