Obituary
Florence “Terry” McDougall (Sharein)
1934-2020
It is with extreme sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother Florence “Terry” McDougall on April 15, 2020, at the age of 85 at her adopted home of Westview Place in Penticton, BC.
Mom was the 13th child born to Herman and Dorothea Sharein in Erinview, Manitoba on August 21, 1934. Mom was given no middle name because by the time she came along, Grandma had run out of names! Mom lived on the family farm near Winnipeg until 1943 when her parents sold it because all 4 brothers had gone off to war leaving only girls to do all the chores. Someone gave Mom an electric light bulb before they moved which she cherished. She was amazed to think that it would bring light in her new home in Penticton – a memory she never forgot. She went to school for a while and then took jobs at the cleaners and as a seamstress to help make ends meet.
Mom and Dad married in 1955 in Sarnia, Ontario. The newlyweds settled down in West Vancouver to raise 3 children. In 1969, the family relocated to Penticton and together operated “Phil’s Grocery” on Main Street from 1974 until 1982. Many may remember Mom from her other jobs at Bongarde or supervising the back mail shop at The Penticton Herald. Mom eventually made the choice to move to Westview Place where she loved the staff and meals – and the staff and residents loved her smile, wit, and her marbles.
Terry was predeceased by her parents, all her siblings, and her husband Harold (2012). Her beautiful smile and generous spirit will be remembered and sadly missed by her children: Wayne (Donna), Gary (Sue) and Deb (Lawrence); her grandchildren Julius, James (Tiffany), Alex (Tara), Christopher (Jessica) and Holly (Perry); great grand children Annabelle, Joshua, Zachary, and Sophia; and many Sharein nieces and nephews.
Mom always loved animals, especially lions and elephants and she so treasured hearing them both while visiting her son in Kaleden. Mom loved the musical group ABBA and the title song from the movie “Born Free” was played at her interment service at Lakeview Cemetery, along with her son’s bagpipes escorting Mom to her final resting place beside her husband and parents.
We will forever love and miss you Mom and now you can finally rest with Dad. The family would like to thank Dr. Walters and the Westview Place staff and residents for their care and love for Florence where her last days were spent in comfort and peace. It was Terry’s request that there be no funeral or memorial service and ask that those whose lives she touched take a moment to reflect on their memories and remember her in your own special way.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to SPCA, colon cancer research or Penticton Regional Hospital.
