She was predeceased by her parents, Grace and Charles Johnston, and her siblings, Jean Janakowski, Bill Johnston, Rosemary Johnston, and Margaret Redden. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandparent and she will be greatly missed.
Florence was always engaged in her community. When she lived in Thunder Bay, she was a member of Broadway United Church, leading youth groups, organizing the Sunday school, serving on the church board, and leading the choir. After her retirement from McKellar Hospital as director of public relations and volunteers, she and her husband returned to Massey where they built a home in the Birch Lake area. In Massey, she led the choir and played the organ at St. Andrew’s United Church, was a member of the Massey Players, managed the Massey Fair, was a member of the Massey Area Museum board, volunteered at the Learning Centre, and founded the Voices of Spring choir. In 2012, she was awarded a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal to recognize her community service.
Many thanks to the doctors, nurses, and all the other wonderful staff at the Espanola Hospital and at Health Sciences North for the care Florence received. A very special thank you to her niece, Gloria Richer who was with her when she passed.
Florence’s remains have been cremated, and there will be a celebration of her life in the spring.
Instead of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Massey Area Museum, 150 Sable Street, P.O. Box 237, Massey, Ontario, P0P 1P0.
