Eva St. Clair West
Eva St. Clair West
On Monday, December 30, Eva West, with family at her side, peacefully passed away at the age of 98 years. A fiercely proud and loyal Cape Bretoner, Mom is survived by her children Eric (Francis), Ralph (Alex), Janet (Wayne) and Dave (Doris); grandchildren Benjamin, Ayasha, Emma, Yuri, Alexander, Josh, Mahlon, Jessica, Stephanie and Aimee; and, 10 great-grandchildren.
Mom’s long life was punctuated by many challenges which she overcame while effectively minimizing their effects on our family. She lost two children, Suzanne and Peter, at very young ages. As a military wife, she endured singlehandedly packing up her household and family on innumerable occasions as our we moved from posting to posting. Mom always made the best of whatever situation she found herself in. When, after many years as a stay-at-home mom, circumstances required her entering the workforce, she quickly transitioned from a nervous new worker to an indispensable employee.
Later in life, Mom’s caring and giving nature led her to volunteer with the polio patients at the former Municipal Hospitals, arranging and playing in their bridge games, quickly turning a volunteer effort into enduring friendships. Once she did retire, she devoted many years to assisting in the care of her mother, her sister-in-law and her brother, relocating to Cape Breton to do so.
Mom developed close, lifelong friendships from her youth through her retirement years. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her and her loss will be keenly felt. Her relationships with her grandchildren were the most important. Her love was unconditional and they knew it; her wisdom was imparted generously and was received willingly. They all are better for having had Mom as a significant part of their lives.
Eva’s final year was spent on 2 West, the specialized respiratory care unit at Riverview Health Centre. She continued to develop close relationships with both her fellow residents and the Unit staff. The family wishes to extend its thanks to the many caregivers on 2 West who gave Mom the kind and loving care she so thoroughly appreciated. We must single out Rose, the unit’s Recreation Energizer Bunny, whose daily jokes and tireless efforts made Mom’s stay so much more enjoyable.
Cremation has already taken place and a service will be held for Mom at the Chapel at Riverview Health Centre, One Morley Avenue on Saturday, January 4th at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eva’s memory to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation in support of recreational programming.
