Obituary
Eva Marie (Mercier) MacDougall passed away peacefully of natural causes at Blomidon Court
nursing home in Greenwich, NS, on Saturday, December 5, 2020, aged 85 years old.
Eva was born in Belledune, Gloucester County, NB, on July 5, 1935, to Frank (Francois) Mercier
and Agathe White (Leblanc). She grew up during the Great Depression and World War II, a
challenging and traumatic time of her life that left indelible memories of which she often spoke
with mixed feelings.
Eva was part of a large tight-knit family that highly valued education and self-improvement
which produced many high school and university graduates over the generations. In keeping with
that, Eva started in a one-room rural schoolhouse and became an honours graduate of Nash
Creek High School, Class of 1955—a rarity for the time and place and her gender. She began her
professional career in banking, first in Bathurst, NB, later moving to Montreal, QC, and then
Toronto, ON, where she met and married Joseph L. MacDougall (now deceased). Eva had five
children and subsequently assumed the formidable role of house-keeper while simultaneously
juggling outside employment, finally retiring from retail sales in 1985 in Greenwood, NS.
Eva was a beautiful vibrant woman, always careful of her appearance, with a wry and lively
sense of humour; she loved a good practical joke and especially a strong coffee. She was a great
storyteller of her childhood experiences and, despite her ofttimes difficult life, always maintained
an indomitable spirit that could not be broken. A good cook, but an even better baker, her pride
was her house and kids and she looked after both with great care and attention.
Eva Marie Mercier MacDougall is survived by her children, Peggy (Montreal, QC), John
(Bathurst, NB), Barry (Edmonton, AB), David Glenn (Richmond, Virginia, USA), and Dianne
(Greenwood, NS). Eva also has several grandchildren including: Melissa (Ottawa, ON),
Elizabeth Jane (Calgary, AB), Robert (Calgary, AB), and William (Richmond, Virginia).
Eva’s wishes were to be cremated and her remains are currently with The White Family Funeral
Home in Kentville, NS (whitefamilyfuneralhome.com). Longer term plans are for her interment
with her people in northern New Brunswick, final arrangements which are currently hampered
by COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
The family profoundly thanks the staff of Blomidon Court nursing home in Greenwich, NS, for
the excellent care Eva received, and the genuine affection and kindness consistently shown by
the nursing staff over the years—especially in her final days and hours. Her passing was calm,
peaceful, and dignified solely because of the kind and loving people at Blomidon Court.
In lieu of flowers it is respectfully requested that donations be made in her name to the Heart and
Stroke Foundation of Canada (a charity for which she canvassed door-to-door for many years) or
the Lung Association of Nova Scotia.
