Obituary
WELLS, Emma (nee Howell) (April 19, 1922 – November 4, 2020) – Passed peacefully away at Glenbrook Lodge on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at the age of 98, Emma Beatrice (Howell) Wells. Predeceased by her parents William Fredrick and Fanny Elizabeth (nee Saunders) Howell; brothers: Ronald MacNeil (Josephine), William Roy (Blanche), Fredrick Thomas (Dorothy); sisters: Alma Kathleen (Mark Badcock), Flora Isobell McCarthy, Frances Katherine (George Earle) and Olwyn Jean Taylor. Leaving to mourn are her daughter, Elizabeth Brown (Robert) and son Kenneth (Lorna Gilbert); brother, Duncan Howell (Eunice, deceased) and brother-in-law, Clarence (Buck) Taylor. Also mourning her loss are her grandson, Adam Brown (Cheryl Sturge) and their children: Parker and Colton; her granddaughter, Andrea Nixon (David) and their children: Tyler and Ashley; and grandson, Kyle Wells; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Emma was very active with Gower Street United Church, and was a very well loved and respected member of the UCW. Her volunteer spirit flowed into everything she did, from knitting prayer shawls for the church to finger puppets for the Janeway, and lots of baked goods along the way for auctions and sales. In 2001, she received a medal from the Senate of Canada for her volunteer work. Emma was a member of the Avalon Mall “Mall Walkers” from 1991-2010. In 2012 the Seniors Resource Centre awarded her with the Dorothy Whittick Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to the work of the centre. Her love of knitting and sewing began early, knitting the socks and jerseys for the Carbonear Caribou’s Hockey Team. She was also an avid sports fan: baseball, hockey, tennis and curling were her favorites. Special thanks to the 2nd floor Nurses and staff at Glenbrook Lodge for their care and compassion. Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Barrett’s Funeral Home. Visitation to take place at Barrett’s, 328 Hamilton Avenue, on Saturday, November 7, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral service to be held from Barrett’s Chapel on Sunday, November 8, 2020 at 11:00am (COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS APPLY).
