It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Emily Marjorie Mae Henschel (nee Lowe), our devoted mother on October 24, 2020. Born April 27, 1924 in Pincher Creek, Alberta, Mom grew up in the Elk Valley and witnessed many world changes during her 96 years.
Emily moved to Trail in 1944 where she met her loving husband Emil. They married in 1945 and raised three children, Dennis of Comox, Gail Larson (Jim) of Fruitvale and Joy Roberts (Ernie) of Fort Nelson, BC. She was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren, Heather Mason, Elysia Scott, Curtis, Quinn, Angela and Janelle Roberts and four great-grandchildren Ally, Ben, Avery and November.
She was predeceased by Dad in 2014; her parents Thomas and Emily; siblings Ted, Jim, Gertie, Roger, Arthur, Ken, Jack, Bob and daughter-in-law Gloria. She is survived by her younger sister Edna Hamilton; sister-in-law Marjorie Lowe; many nieces, nephews and distant cousins in England.
Our energizer “bunny” always liked to be busy. She enjoyed playing bridge at the ladies homes and later at the seniors centre in Trail. In her younger years bowling, golfing, walking the Trail bridges and attending local concerts were some of her favourite things to do. She loved to travel and together with Emil enjoyed many cruises in their senior years. She was a member of the United Church and UCWL when she was capable she would be there to help whether it be the church tea or visiting at the hospital. An avid reader her entire life she always had a book in her hand. As a young girl she would create stories for her siblings’ enjoyment. In the last weeks of life Emily took comfort from her family reading her psalms and poems.
Emily’s greatest legacy was her family with whom she instilled strong values of kindness and caring for others. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Although she was tiny in stature she was fierce and feisty to the end.
As an expression of sympathy, donations in Emily’s name may be made to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Health Foundation at 1200 Hospital Bench, Trail, BC, V1R 4M1 or online at www.kbrhhealthfoundation.ca
