Elsie’s Obituary
Elsie Adams, beloved wife of the late Mike Adams, passed away at the Norquay Health Centre on March 19, 2020, at the age of 92 years.
Elsie was born on October 10, 1927 to John Gaina and Victoria (Derkach) Gayno of the Norquay District, SK. She received her education at Mellmore School. As a young girl, Elsie worked in a café in Norquay, where she met Mike Adams. After their marriage in November 1945, they took ownership of a store in Mondou, SK. Shortly after, they made the decision to return to Norquay to farm and start their family. Together, they were blessed with two children, Pamela and Gibney.
Over the years, Elsie’s strong work ethic remained evident as she worked at the Norquay Creamery and farmed alongside her husband Mike. Together they owned and operated the Norquay Deluxe Theatre which made her very popular with all the local kids. She had a big heart and would often let children she knew did not have money into the movies and give them free popcorn. Mike & Elsie enjoyed giving back to the community and would also provide a free matinee at Christmas time as children would wait for Santa’s arrival. Elsie returned to school to become a Certified Home Care Aide and worked in the community. After retiring from Home Care, she continued to care for elderly people in their own home.
Elsie had a passion for animals and loved her dogs & cats. She deeply appreciated her life on the farm with so many animals to care for. She liked to plant a big garden, crochet and knit, and enjoyed the company of others as she loved to joke and laugh with those around her. She enjoyed watching soap operas, wrestling, and religious shows in her leisure time. With her sense of communal spirit, she knew everyone, and everyone certainly knew her.
Dedicated to her community and to her faith, Elsie devoted her life to the Orthodox Church. She volunteered her time as the church secretary, helped wherever she could and spent her life caring, providing, and praying for others.
Of all the places in the world, Elsie loved her home in Norquay the most. After Mike’s passing, Elsie continued to live independently on the farm until she became a resident of the Norquay Health Centre, where she continued to reside until her passing.
Elsie leaves a lasting legacy of love, patience, and pride for her family, which included many of her friends, fellow residents, caregivers, staff, and community members.
Elsie will be remembered as a strong, determined woman, with an abundance of faith and love to share. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Elsie was predeceased by her parents, John Gaina and Victoria Gayno; husband, Mike Adams; brothers: Pete and Metro Gayno; and her sister, Mae Lozinsky.
She is survived by her children, Pamela (Mark) Esselman of Texas, USA and Gibney “Gib” Adams of Edmonton, AB; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and the many friends and caregivers she considered family.
A Private Funeral Service was held from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Petro Tsenov officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. A Public Celebration of Elsie’s Life will be announced at a later date. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Norquay Health Centre Auxiliary, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Elsie Adams.
