Betty passed away peacefully at the Edmonton General, from Alzheimer’s disease.
Betty practiced psychiatry in Edmonton for over forty years. She was extraordinarily kind. She was a great listener. She generously supported numerous charities. She loved the outdoors and her garden. She loved classical music, walking her dogs and meals with friends and family. She observed many times that as a little girl, orphaned in Depression-era rural Alberta, she could never have imagined the wonderful life she would live.
She is survived by her daughters, Esther (David Skene), Ruth (Rafael Castro) and Sarah (Shawn McQuitty); her grandsons, Rafael Castro-Schwab and Daniel Castro-Schwab; and by her niece, Yvon Collett. She is also survived by her Border Collie, Naomi. She was predeceased by her husband and the love of her life, Vern Schwab, and by her brother, Jack Collett.
We fully expect that she will be met at the Gates of Heaven by the people she loved who have gone before her, and by a large pack of delighted dogs waiting to walk with her.
She leaves behind many beloved friends and Grandview neighbours who stood by her and supported her as her Alzheimer’s progressed very rapidly and Betty’s family acknowledges your loyalty and compassion.
The family wishes to thank, in particular, Sasha Wu, whose loving care allowed Betty to stay in her home as long as possible and also Shelley Jensen and the incredible staff at Unit 7 AB at the Edmonton General. Betty’s family could not have asked for kinder, gentler care during Betty’s final days.
Due to Covid restrictions, a private memorial service for friends and family will be held at a later date.
If desired, donations in Betty’s memory can be made to the Covenant Foundation (Edmonton General Hospital) or to the Salvation Army.
