Elizabeth Elliott

Elizabeth Ann (Betty ) Hague (née Elliott) died peacefully under the kind care of the doctors and nurses in the Covid 19 section of the Lakeshore General Hospital, Pointe Claire, Quebec.
She was the widow of Ross Hague, mother of Danny and Libby Hague (spouse Philip Anisman), dear sister of Mary Ellen Gormley, sister in law of Lotti Hague and Jerry Hague .
Betty was a lovely, kind, caring, complicated woman. Having grown up in the village of Sparta, Ontario, she entertained her children with stories of the colourful people who had lived there because, of course, nothing is private in a village. After studying psychology and philosophy at Western University during the war, she worked as a psychologist at Scarborough Hospital. She played the piano and cello, and read avidly all her life. During their courtship, she and Ross went dancing to the big bands on the night piers of Port Stanley. Her love of this music and dancing stayed with her throughout her life.
As was often the case in the 1950’s, she “stopped working” when she had children and became a housewife, a vocation she found fulfilling. She ironed sheets and sewed costumes and party dresses. She created a warm home life, reading to her children at lunch; they always begged for another chapter before running back to school. She was a very good and adventurous cook. She made roasts, relishes, pickles, jams and especially Christmas cookies.
Like her generation, she volunteered – at the local library, meals on wheels, a suicide prevention hotline and helping mothers of children with disabilities. Out of a desire to help others, she enrolled in a clinical study for tamoxifen, a drug that showed promise for breast cancer.
In spite of the isolation caused by her recent deafness and Alzheimers, she never lost her good nature, and wonderfully, she forgot to be afraid of anything.
In her later years, she needed assistance which was thoughtfully and lovingly provided by Olabisi Soboyede and Glenna Matthews for whom the family feels continuing affection and gratitude. The family also thanks Larry Tittley for his kind support and good advice for the last 30 years.
There will be a celebration of her life in the spring or summer.
