Eleanor Elizabeth Laur Wednesday November 11th 2020

Eleanor (Nell) Elizabeth Laur
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eleanor (Nell) Elizabeth Laur (nee Rees), on November 11, 2020 at the age of 82.
Nell passed away peacefully in her home, independent to the end.
Born in Cambridge, England, following schooling and trained in Radiography, she moved to Canada in the late 50’s. She worked in her chosen career as an X-Ray technician in various places across Canada. While working in the Vancouver area, she met Gunnar and eventually moved to Fort Frances, working at LaVerendrye General. They married, settled in Mine Centre, and started their family.
At that point she chose to stay home and raise her children.
Nell had a great love for the outdoors. In her younger years she travelled the world, partaking in activities such as long distance swimming, downhill skiing, mountain climbing and hiking. Nell enjoyed many hobbies, some of her favorites were gardening, photography, sewing, knitting and bird watching. Nell had an incredible green thumb and was adept at identifying many species of plants. If she didn’t know what something was, she made it a point to find out! She shared her musical talents by teaching piano and by singing with the Fort Frances Choraliers. She was a member of the Overseas Wives Club, the Field Naturalists Club, the Horticultural Society, and had an active role in SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together). She volunteered her talents for various events throughout the district including tailoring costumes for many a High School Musical. She served as Chairman of the Mine Centre School Board for a number of terms, served on the Mine Centre roads board and did weather recording for Environment Canada from her weather station in Mine Centre.
One of her favorite places to be in recent years was at the Fort Frances Museum, using her love of history, expert computer skills and precise attention to detail to accession artifacts. She made many friends, both young and old, through her various activities in the community.
Nell had a big heart and a soft spot for anything with four legs and fur. She was especially fond of dogs. Nell loved her family deeply and cherished all the time she spent with them, living every moment to the fullest.
A fastidious individual, Nell put a great deal of value on reliability, organization and routine. If she said she would do something, you could consider it done! Never one to make a fuss, her wishes for independence were realized to the end.
Nell leaves behind her children, Liz (Steven) Lindsay and their children Eric and Zoe, Ingemar (Heather) Laur and their son Christian, Inno (Andrea) Laur and their children Brenden and Khloe. Her Sisters, Roz, Veronica(Colin), Jane (Nigel) and numerous Nieces, Nephews and Cousins in both the UK and Canada.
She was predeceased by her parents, Rev. James A Rees, Mrs. Gertrude Rees, and her husband Gunnar Laur.
Cremation has taken place, there is no service planned as of yet due to the pandemic.
Donations in Nell’s honor may be made to MADD Canada or the Ontario SPCA c/o Northridge Funeral Home, Box 89, Emo, ON P0W 1E0. Online condolences may be offered at www.northridgefuneralhome.com
