Edward “Ducky”‘s Obituary
DEVEAU, Edward J. – age 91, of Yarmouth, NS, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital surrounded by his wife of 69 years, Elizabeth (Betty), and his daughter, Ann. Born January 19, 1929, in Digby County as Clayton Ellsworth Sabean, he was adopted by the late Emile and Marceline Deveau of Yarmouth. Ed attended local schools, where he picked up the lifelong nickname of Ducky, and graduated from Yarmouth Academy in 1947. He worked as a bank teller, life insurance agent and bookkeeper, retiring in 1990 as comptroller of Fundy Group Publications. A man of deep faith, Ed was a longtime member of St. Ambrose Co-Cathedral where he contributed as an altar server, lector, greeter and counter. He was proud to be a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a volunteer firefighter for more than 20 years with the Yarmouth Fire Department, Hook and Ladder Company. As a younger man, he played basketball and baseball – pitching a no-hit, no-run game for the Kiwanis Juniors in 1948 – and won many trophies as a bowler. Ed’s hobbies included coin collecting and reading non-fiction. In addition to his wife and daughter, Ed is survived by his son-in-law, Douglas Milander; grandsons, Michael and Daniel Deveau; daughter-in-law, Mary Coffill Deveau; half-siblings, Maureen (Roy, deceased) Prime, Shirley (Malcolm, deceased) Bradshaw, Erma (Robert, deceased) Carlson, Lindsay (Helen, deceased) Ford, Ernest (Sharon) Ford and Bona (Glenn) McRae. Ed was predeceased by his beloved son, Robert (Bobby) and by his half-brothers, Henry Ford and St. Clair Ford. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, where visitation will take place from 6-8 p.m. Thursday with prayers at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will take place at St. Ambrose Co-Cathedral, Yarmouth, at 11 a.m., Friday, October 16 with interment to follow in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, seating may be limited at the funeral home and church and social distancing guidelines must be followed (immediate family will be given priority for seating). It has been requested that there be family flowers only. Donations in memory of Edward may be made to a charity of choice. You may leave messages of condolence for the family at www.huskilson.net
