Obituary
REDL, Edna
April 27, 1934 – May 2, 2020
A woman of strength, of humor and above all, a woman of God. Our Mom, Grandma, and Nana left our world for a better place on Saturday, May 2. Edna Redl (nee Kurtenbach), was the youngest of five children to parents Anton and Magdalena (Hackl) Kurtenbach. She grew up on the family farm in Cudworth, SK. Edna completed her Business Course and began her career in accounting at the Bank of Montreal in Wakaw where she met the love of her life, Elmer Redl at the age of 18. Edna and Elmer were married on December 9, 1953 in Cudworth. Their first home was in Wakaw where they were blessed with five children, 2 girls and 3 boys. They farmed in the Wakaw area until 1958, moved to Prud’homme for two years and then returned to Wakaw to continue farming and raising cattle. In 1965 the family moved to Saskatoon where Edna remained at home to care for the children until 1970 when her youngest started school. She was employed with Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Parish doing accounting for 26 years, until she retired in 1996. Edna and Elmer celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary in 2018 just prior to Elmer’s passing in March of 2019. While on earth, Edna embodied the full spirit of what it means to be a mother and build a family. Even after her children grew up and moved on with their lives, Edna’s home continued to be a place of both wisdom and nourishment for the next generation of grandkids, and then great-grandkids. Many afternoons were spent teaching the younger generations how to bake and decorate her famous sugar cookies, process and can garden produce, make cinnamon buns and her favorite soups, especially borscht. Hosting extensive family gatherings was always a source of pride for Edna, instilling this tradition in those she leaves behind. Edna possessed a loving personality and shared her gift of love and laughter with her large family and many friends. A trait that Edna possessed in abundance during her final months, was gratitude. She surprised everyone by surviving her stroke of February 27 and treated each day afterwards as a precious gift from God. It is humbling to witness how the gratefulness of one individual can so positively and strongly impact others. When the thought of Edna comes to mind, or a memory of her surfaces, take a moment to think about the many things for which you are grateful.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank Edna’s niece, Kathy Newton, for being her rock for the last few years. Over Edna’s last several months, she was lovingly cared for by her son, Dan and his wife Lorraine. She spent her last days receiving the love and care from her family that she so often gave to others. With her favourite hymns playing and the beautiful singing of the birds, Edna passed peacefully on a sunny Saturday morning, while looking at the beautiful prairie sky.
Left to cherish her memory are her three boys who she was so proud of: Dan (Lorraine), Gerry (Michelle), and Tom (Ieva). Edna loved being with her boys after Elmer’s passing, as she said “it feels like I have a piece of Elmer with me”. Also left to raise a wine glass to their amazing mom, are her two daughters, Laura (Henry) Dutka and Lynn (Clint) Ekdahl. These two precious daughters were always a source of joy and pride for Edna, along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They all now have a missing place in their hearts which their Mom, Grandma and Nana had filled to over-flowing. A private family Mass of Christian Burial and Rite of Committal will be held on Thursday, May 7th at 2:00 p.m. All who loved Edna will be able to watch the Mass live-streamed at: youtu.be/GwsVZ82gu14. A celebration of life will be held at a later date when we can all gather together safely. In honour of Edna’s life and the legacy of love she left behind, please take the opportunity to tell those closest to you how much they are loved and cherished. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the RUH Foundation; c/o Neurology Dept. in memory of Edna Redl. Edna’s family would like to express their gratitude to the Neurology Team and nursing staff at RUH, the SHA team and Palliative Nurses for the support and care they gave Edna and her family.
