Obituary
SEPKE, Douglas Ervin
1949 – 2020
The past 21 months of Doug’s life were lived with stage 4 liver cancer. He passed away at home on October 25 with the assistance of MAID. He had a very peaceful passing surrounded by his immediate family, his best friend Art and our black lab Lexie (his shadow and constant companion). Doug is survived by his wife Kathy, sons Michael (Kandis), granddaughter Amelia, Anthony (Nadine), grandson Asher, granddaughter Nolah, sisters Darlene (Lance) Gunther, Ellen (Murray) Rettger, Joyce (Craig) Trulsrud, brother Lenard (Pam), 11 nieces and nephews and their families, aunts and cousins. Doug was very proud of his sons, daughters-in-law and 3 of the best grandchildren anyone could ever have. Just ask Amelia how he used to brag about her baton accomplishments to anyone and everyone. To Asher and Nolah – how much does Grandpa love you? THIS…………..MUCH! To the nieces who always argued that they were Doug’s favourite, you really all were. Doug went to NAIT in Edmonton and became a journeyman carpenter. He worked for Poole Construction for 10 years until we returned to Saskatchewan to farm. He loved to be on the land and always said the farm was the best place to raise kids. In 1993 Doug had the opportunity to return to construction by going to Russia to build an artist’s village in Yakutsk. He really enjoyed the experience and always said he would do it again if he had the chance. Going to Russia really made a person appreciate our way of life in Canada. When the Russia job was done, he returned to farming for a time. He eventually went back to construction and worked for Atel Concrete until his failing health and Covid did not allow him to return to work. Doug was pretty smug about the fact that he got Nadine involved in construction too. She became a safety officer and would ask him if he was following the safety guidelines at work to which he always said yes, of course. Doug loved his hunting trips with Anthony. Since the draw system was brought in for big game they have been drawn for moose, elk and this year for mule deer. Unfortunately he won’t get to go this year. At the beginning of July this year Doug, Michael, Anthony and Art went on a fishing trip to Clarke Lake. They had a great time with the pelicans and all brought home their quota of delicious fish that was eaten in no time. Doug had a level 2 coaching certificate and loved to coach kids in ball, bowling and curling. He also loved to participate in all those sports himself. Doug was always ready to play cards and games of any kind. Visitors could hardly get in our door before he was sitting at the table with cards and games on the table, usually with country music booming in the background. Much to everyone’s frustration he usually won the majority of the games until Kandis joined the family and she gave him some competition. He always said she had horseshoes up her butt. Doug LOVED his Dairy Queen ice cream. It had to be from the original DQ in Saskatoon on 8th Street though because they use the top grade of ice milk. If you are going by the DQ in the future, stop in for a treat and think of him. Some people get special mention in Doug’s life. Art (his partner in crime). They weren’t always the best influence on each other. There have been too many shenanigans over the years to mention. Also very special to Doug are Sabine, Miche and her family and Rob. Doug will be greatly missed by all his family and many great friends. We would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who gave Doug such great care during his hospital stays over the past 21 months. He was in all 3 hospitals at one time or another. Especially the nurses though because nurses rock. We would also like to sincerely thank Dr. Thorpe and Dr. Weiler with MAID for making it possible for Doug to be home for his passing like he wanted. Doug would also like to thank Dr. Hey for being such a caring family doctor. Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to Hannah and Kent Fleming in trust for Ty (great-nephew) with Angelman Syndrome (hannah@sociallycorrect.ca) Cremation arrangements in care of Chelsea Krentz – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
