Douglas “Doug” Scott MacPhail
Peacefully at the Prince Edward Home on Saturday, July 4,
2020 in his 91st year. Douglas “Doug” MacPhail was born on
December 11, 1929 in Charlottetown, PEI to Walter Scott MacPhail and
Lulu Grace MacPhail. On July 3, 1959, Doug married Joan
Adelaide Howatt of Crapaud, PEI. They were blessed to celebrate 61
years of marriage on July 3, 2020. A dedicated and successful
farmer who began his career with mixed farming. Later, he specialized
in growing seed and early potatoes with the MacPhail Brothers. He also
took great pride in raising healthy and award winning Limousin cattle.
He was featured on the CBC National when one of his cows had triplets.
He loved farming and continued to take a great interest in the crops
on the land even after retirement. His faith in Jesus Christ guided
his last 36 years of life. His love of his dear wife and family was a
blessing- one that we all treasured right until the end. Ever the
proud grandfather, Doug could always be found attending concerts,
graduations, and other special events to encourage his three
granddaughters. Doug was an active member of the Desable Free Church.
All who knew Doug will remember his hospitality, as he was often heard
inviting people to, “Come in and have a cup of
tea.” He will be sadly missed by his wife, Joan
MacPhail, his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia MacPhail-Darrach and
Wayne Darrach, his grandchildren, Caitlyn Darrach, Micayla Darrach,
Rachel Pauley, his grandson-in-law, Jason Pauley, his sisters-in-law,
Margaret Gallant, Miriam Harvey, Nancy Howatt, and special nephew Paul
Howatt (Kate). Doug was also proudly awaiting the upcoming birth of
his first great-granddaughter in October. He was predeceased by his
father at the age of seven. Doug and his mother were thankful to be
blessed with a strong, supportive MacPhail family. These uncles and
aunts, “brothers” and “sisters” offered
huge support and encouragement. Doug continued to enjoy the monthly
family luncheons with these beloved family members until his admission
to long term care. He is predeceased by his mother and his infant
brother, Kenneth. He is also predeceased by brothers in law-
Doug Howatt, Alison Howatt, Roy Gallant, Ralph Lowther, Lyman Harvey,
and sister-in-law, Mary Howatt. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions can be made to the Alzheimer Society of PEI in memory of
Douglas MacPhail. A special thank you to the staff of the Fox Meadow
Unit, Prince Edward Home who cared for Doug with kindness and
compassion. A private ceremony will be held at the church on July 7.
Interment at Argyle Shore Cemetery immediately following service.
