In loving memory of Douglas Roper Andersen who passed away after a short illness on October 19th, 2020.
Doug was born on July 5th, 1940 and was raised and educated in Wabigoon, Ontario. Doug married Maureen Smith in June of 1960 and together they had 4 children in the ensuing 7 years.
Doug was employed by the Lands and Forests in the early years and graduated from the Toronto Forestry School in 1963. He cut wood on weekends to supplement his income and provide for his growing family. In the late 70’s he acquired a logging contract with Boise Cascade (Kenora-Fort Frances) and Regional Logging Ind.1979 Ltd. was formed at that time. Doug was the first contractor to cross the picket line during a bitter labour dispute and subsequently became Boise-Cascade’s largest wood contractor.
In 1980 Doug imported 25 Bison from Wyoming and within a few years the herd grew to 200. Doug enjoyed nothing more than driving amongst his herd and watching them while out in the pasture or just from his bedroom window. Doug was the first to introduce Lodgepole Pine to the area and setup an experimental plantation. He and grandson Jacob planted thousands of trees on Doug’s various woodlots. Doug was an innovator and visionary, always up to a challenge. He was a member of the American and Canadian Bison Association, Trumpeter Swan and Wildlife Societies.
Doug will be missed very much by his best friend and wife Maureen, sons, Mark (Lauris) and Kris, daughters, Marcy-Lynn and Natalie, sister Penny (Wm.Higgins), grandsons, Jacob, Alex and Max. Doug was predeceased by his parents Denise and Ernest Andersen, son-in-law Paul Gwynne and brother-in-law Bill Higgins.
His family would like to thank Dr. Ben Piper and the nursing staff at the hospital for their kindness and care while he was with them.
A private service to celebrate Doug’s life will be held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church with Father Al Campeau officiating.
