Douglas Garfield Warren
Ingonish
Douglas Garfield Warren, age 95 of Ingonish. passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2020 in Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour with his two children by his side. Born in Ingonish on April 20, 1925, Doug was the son of the late Frank and Emma (Roper) Warren.
Dad was a kind hearted, most loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He cherished his family and many, many friends he made over the years. He and Mom owned and operated the Brookside Drive-In and Laundromat for years, where they made many friends.
He worked for Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Ingonish until his retirement in 1990. In his younger years, he was a truck driver for Tryner’s Construction when they paved the Cabot Trail for the first time in 1952. He had many stories about that time.
His retirement was spent gardening, playing cards especially crib, and watching his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs (and he remembered them winning a cup) and travelling. One of his greatest memories was going on a family vacation to Walt Disney World at the young age of 90. He also enjoyed a trip to Toronto to watch his Leafs win 2 years ago.
He was a founding member of the Ingonish Volunteer Fire Department and served the organization with pride for many years. Over the years, he has told many stories about the early years of its formation and the friendships he developed. He was a lifelong member of Ingonish United Church, serving many years as elder.
He is survived by his children and families who will miss him dearly: son Frank (Linda), daughter Pauline (Roger), grandchildren Kelly (Tim), Jamie, Kenzie (Erin) and Ben, great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Grady and Emma, son-in-law Travis Donovan. He is also survived by Steven Brewer and Sandy Dunphy, who were like family. He leaves behind his beloved dog Coco who was his constant companion.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by the love of his life and partner of 59 years, Doris, in 2008, brothers, Roy Warren and Edward Warren, sisters Maggie Snow and Nina Samways.
Our family would like to extend a heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of Buchanan Memorial Hospital for the compassion and care of Dad. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
A private family burial will be held in the upcoming week. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date due to Covid-19 restrictions. Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
