Obituary of Doris Peckover
Doris Goddard Peckover
1926 – 2020
In loving memory of Doris Goddard Peckover who passed away at the Temiskaming Lodge on April 7, 2020 at the age of 93.
Doris will always be remembered by her children Sandy (Rick), Joan, Doug (Brenda), Tom (Lise), her daughter-in-law Maureen and sister-in-law, Barbara as well as a great family friend, Tish, referred to by Doris as her third daughter. Her grandchildren Sean (Lisa), Brent (Diane), Shannon (Chin), Kathryn (Nick), Ryan, Michael (Diane), Trevor (Erin), Kevin, Derek (Lisa), Ryan, John, Jayme and Julieanne and her 13 great grandchildren held a special place in her heart.
She was predeceased by her first husband Howard and second husband Wesley, her sons Jim and Dick as well as her sisters Rose (Fred), Edna (Bob), Gertie (Jack), Dolly (George) and brothers Fred (Mavis, Jean) and Jim.
Doris was born to Grace and William Ballard in Whitby and raised on the family farm, later moving to New Liskeard where she met and married Howard. Growing up, she claimed she would never marry a farmer but she did. She was a true farmer’s wife and handled everything from milking cows, haying, harvest and all the other outdoor jobs on a farm.
Doris and Howard created a home for their children and everyone was welcome at The Farm. Many nieces and nephews spent time there with her only comment – “I’ll add another potato to the pot and slice the roast a little thinner”. Meals were home-cooked with a homemade dessert every night. Her nieces and nephews still rave about her cakes which she would whip up on a moment’s notice. Did you say pie? She made the best pie crust and did pies for every family dinner – not a small feat since we often had upwards of 30 people in attendance.
Doris served as a trustee for the Harley Township School Board and was an active member of Branch 54 Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion where she held the office of President for a few years. She learned to play darts at the Legion, as well as cribbage and loved both games. Not one to have idle hands, Doris was a quilter with a beautiful hand quilting stitch. She also was a knitter and did mitts and hats for everyone including several church groups in our area.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
If desired, donations to the Temiskaming Hospital CAT scan fund or the New Liskeard Bikers Reunion Community Cancer fund will be gratefully acknowledged.
A final acknowledgement and thanks to Dr. Davies and the staff at the Temiskaming Lodge in Haileybury for the care and compassion you showed our mother, Doris. Words can never express our gratitude to each and every one of you.
