DOMONEY, Marlene (née Osterlin)
February 2, 1941 — December 14, 2020
Marlene passed away peacefully from leukemia on December 14, 2020 in Kelowna, BC with her twin sister Darlene at her side.
Marlene grew up on the family farm in the Nut Lake District near Kelvington, Saskatchewan where she attended Nut Lake school, taking only nine years to complete ten grades. She went to Kelvington High School for grades eleven and twelve. These were very tough years with boarding in town and having many problems getting home on weekends. In the winter that sometimes involved having to come home by a tractor relayed from horse and sled and sometimes even by Bombardier. The heavy snow years of the late fifties were a big problem getting to and from town. After graduating from high school, she went to the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon where she received two undergraduate degrees. Then in 1969, she obtained her MSc in statistics from the University in Calgary in Alberta.
At a time when computers were big main frames that were shared by many users, Marlene began working in the computer field. Programs had to be written and entered on punch cards before information could be calculated. Marlene progressed in her career and finished as Director of the Computing Centre at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. In retirement, she enjoyed travelling and had many adventures in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and China. She also enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, and keeping fit with long walks – including marathons.
Marlene is survived by her sister Darlene Osterlin; brothers Mervin Osterlin (Irene), Vernon Osterlin, and Randall Osterlin (Linda); five nieces and nephews; five grandnieces and grandnephews; one great-grandniece; and numerous cousins.
There will be no service at this time. Interment will be in Kelvingrove Cemetery, Kelvington, Saskatchewan in the summer of 2021. Donations in Marlene’s memory can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, www.llscanada.org.
