Obituary
David Rempel was born on September 1, 1934 to Wilhelm G. And Anna Toews Rempel in Rosenort Manitoba. He peacefully passed away on December 17, 2020 at the Gilbert Plain Personal Care Home at the age of eighty-six years.
Dad’s growing up years were spent on the family farm in the Rosenort area, the youngest in a family of five boys and two girls. He received his education at the Greenbank School.
He experienced the new birth and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on December 19, 1948. A reconsecration in later years brought a mellowing of spirit that continued in his life till the end. We are thankful for the work of God’s grace in his life, and that he is now at rest.
Dad was married to our mother, Mary Lou Koehn, on March 22, 1959 at Chickasha, Oklahoma. They shared life’s joys and sorrows for fifty-eight years until Mom passed away in November 2017 leaving Dad very lonely.
The first years of their married life were spent in Rosenort, MB. Then Dad and Mom moved to Roblin, MB and spent a short time there. Their next move was to a farm in the Gilbert Plains, Manitoba area and that is where they raised their family of three boys and five girls. After they sold the farm, they moved to an acreage north of town. When Mom needed more care, they moved to the Maplewood Manor, Stienbach, MB. After Mom passed away, Dad moved back to Gilbert Plains. The last year of his life was spent in the Gilbert Plains Care Home.
Dad was a farmer all his life, raising grain, cattle and hogs. As a youth, he spent some time working in the bush in winter, and in the early years of marriage supplemented the farm income with carpentry. Dad was a man with a heart for those in unfortunate circumstances, reaching out to them in his own personal way, and was always ready to lend a hand to a neighbour in need. He had the ability to visit on many subjects and his personal interest in people won him life long friends. That his friends would know the Lord was important to him. An experience of a life time was going to Guatemala to help clean up after the 1976 earthquake.Going to church was important to Dad;if we were travelling he saw that we got there.
Dad did not easily show affection, but we know he loved us. Since we did not live near family, highlights were going to visit them. In his later years he he always asked how we were and was interested in what we were doing. This often included the grandchildren. He had a keen sense of humor that expressed itself as long as he was able to communicate.
Those left with fond memories are his children: Arlene and Barry Friesen, Williamstown, NB; Marvin and Rhonda Rempel, Williamstown, NB; Luann and Mike Petoskey, Lake Providence, LA; Pauline and Warren Klassen, Birnie, MB; Lester and Rhonda Rempel, Gilbert Plains, MB; Jerry and Shannon Rempel, Gilbert Plains, MB; Lenora and Ardel Boese, Leoville, SK; Nadine and Darwin Froese, Grandview, MB, twenty-six grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. His brother Nick and Matilda Rempel, Rosenort MB. His in-laws: Melvin Koehn, Lovella, Koehn, Jerald and Linda Koehn, Shirley Koehn, Dennis and Martha Koehn, and Gene Koehn, and many nieces and nephews. Also left to remember him are Trevor and Kerry Wood.
